Mystery Road: Origin season two was filmed in and around Pemberton in Western Australia’s South West. The town and nearby locations stand in for the fictional Loch Iris, including the heritage-listed old school, which was turned into a hospital set. Filming began in November 2024; the series later premiered on ABC TV on 21 September 2025, as announced by Screenwest.
Why the 2024 filming headline is now historical
Screenwest announced on 21 November 2024 that production had commenced in Western Australia’s South West. PerthNow’s report from the same day described filming in Pemberton. “Currently filming” referred to the production’s status at that time, not to a current filming schedule.

Screenwest subsequently announced that the six-part season would premiere on ABC TV on 21 September 2025, with all episodes available on ABC iview. That is the announced release information; it does not establish whether the season remains in the current streaming catalogue. Screenwest’s production announcement and its premiere announcement provide those details.
Where season two was filmed
Pemberton and surrounding sites provided the backdrop for the story’s fictional town of Loch Iris. Screenwest confirms filming around Pemberton township, at Big Brook Dam and Pemberton Caravan Park, and in nearby Deanmill. The production also transformed Pemberton’s heritage-listed old school into a hospital for the series. See Screenwest’s Pemberton location profile for its official location details.

- Constable Swan arrives at his new station fresh from the city, but he’s not new in town. His estranged father lives here, as does, Mary.
PerthNow additionally reported filming in Pemberton streets, Yeagarup, Pemberton District High School, Pemberton Pool and around Deanmill. Those additional site details come from the news report rather than Screenwest’s official list. PerthNow also reported that Pemberton stands in for Loch Iris; it is the real filming location, not the name of the fictional town. Read PerthNow’s report.
What the season is about
Season two continues the early years of Detective Jay Swan, played as a younger character by Mark Coles Smith. According to PerthNow, the story begins six months after the previous season, with Jay and Mary returning to Mary’s mother’s Country. The move brings the story into Mary’s hometown, represented on screen by Pemberton.

Screenwest CEO Rikki Lea Bestall said in the 21 November 2024 production announcement: “This time, the majestic forests of Pemberton in the South West will provide the backdrop for Jay and Mary as they navigate their new life together.” Screenwest’s location profile places Pemberton 320 km south-west of Perth and says the area was originally occupied by Bibbulmun people, who knew it as Wandergarup, meaning “plenty of water.”
