Heartland’s fictional Hudson is represented mainly by High River, Alberta, with additional filming at a Calgary studio and nearby private properties. You can visit public locations in High River and the foothills, including the exterior of Maggie’s Diner, but the working ranch is private and is not open to visitors.
Where was Heartland filmed?
High River, Alberta, stands in for the fictional town of Hudson. The Town of High River says it has represented Hudson since 2007. Production also uses a Calgary studio and nearby private-property locations, so not every setting seen on screen is a public attraction. The Town’s Heartland page has local information.

For visitors, the most practical stops are in High River: the Museum of the Highwood, downtown storefronts, Maggie’s Diner’s exterior and George Lane Park. Millarville and other foothills locations make a longer outing. Tourism Calgary’s guide presents High River as a day trip from Calgary, about a 30-minute drive south.

Start at the Museum of the Highwood
Visit the Museum of the Highwood, which includes a Heartland exhibit and houses the High River Visitor Information Centre. It is a useful first stop for current local details and advice on what is open. Check the museum’s hours before setting out. Museum of the Highwood

Walk High River’s downtown streets
Head along 3rd Avenue to see Maggie’s Diner and nearby storefronts used in the series. Maggie’s is a set, not a public restaurant: visitors can view it from outside and look through the windows, but cannot enter. The exterior is at 123 3 Ave SW, High River, and Travel Alberta describes it as viewable year-round. Travel Alberta: Maggie’s Diner

Continue to George Lane Park
George Lane Park’s gazebo appears in a graduation scene. It is a public park, so treat it as a place to enjoy respectfully rather than a production set or guaranteed filming location on the day of your visit. Tourism Calgary’s Heartland guide

Add Millarville if you have time
Millarville Race Track has been used for racing and rodeo scenes. The nearby market can make this a lively seasonal stop, but hours and event access vary. Tourism Calgary describes the market as running Saturdays from mid-June to early October, with a seasonal holiday market also listed by Travel Alberta for November and December. Check the venue’s current calendar before making the trip. Tourism Calgary’s Heartland guide and Travel Alberta’s Heartland itinerary

Consider other regional stops
Travel Alberta’s broader route includes Spruce Meadows and Christ Church among its regional stops. Its three-day itinerary lists 285 km (177 mi) in total and 3 hours 43 minutes of driving; those are the itinerary publisher’s planning estimates, not guaranteed travel times. Travel Alberta: Heartland Country
Can you visit the Heartland ranch?
No. The working ranch west of Millarville is private property, is not open to public visitation, and its precise location is not disclosed. Do not follow production activity or attempt to enter private land.

| Option | What it suits | Planning detail |
|---|---|---|
| High River day trip | Downtown exteriors, the museum and George Lane Park | Tourism Calgary describes High River as about a 30-minute drive south of Calgary. |
| Millarville and foothills extension | Race-track scenery, seasonal events and rural driving | Check market and venue calendars; access may depend on events. |
| Broader regional itinerary | Adding places such as Spruce Meadows and Christ Church | Travel Alberta lists a three-day route, 285 km (177 mi) and 3 hours 43 minutes of driving as planning estimates. |
A short visit focused on High River keeps the tour simple. Choose the longer route if you want countryside stops, seasonal events or a booked riding activity, and allow time for the actual distances and conditions rather than treating an itinerary estimate as a timetable.

What to know about filming and access
Filming is intermittent and can temporarily affect streets or access. The Town of High River has issued filming notices with detours and requests to keep distance from production; an old notice is not a current filming schedule. Check current municipal updates and follow posted directions if filming is underway. Do not plan around cast sightings.
For the latest local visitor information, contact or visit the Museum of the Highwood and Visitor Information Centre before travelling. Public hours, event schedules and production access can change.
