Hun Hunshi Hunshilal, Sanjiv Shah’s Gujarati political comedy, has returned to public attention through restored archive and festival screenings—but the documented screenings are now past, and a current authorized streaming or purchase option is not established. The film, also known internationally as Love in the Time of Malaria, was completed in 1991 and is commonly listed as a 1992 film.
Where can you watch Hun Hunshi Hunshilal now?
No current authorized viewing or purchase route is established. Its recent circulation has consisted of specific past events, not a confirmed ongoing release: a short YouTube window in October 2020, an Asian Film Archive programme in 2021, a European premiere at Festival des 3 Continents in 2022, and an NFDC-NFAI screening scheduled for July 2025.
That distinction matters if you encounter old links or listings. The film’s past presence on YouTube or in an archive programme does not show that it remains available there today.
What is the film, and why are there two years attached to it?
Hun Hunshi Hunshilal is a Gujarati feature directed by Sanjiv Shah, with a story by Shah and Gujarati writer Paresh Naik. Scroll reports that it was completed in 1991; archive and festival programmes commonly list it as a 1992 film. Its restored-version Asian Film Archive listing gives a runtime of 128 minutes and Gujarati audio with English subtitles. Asian Film Archive programme

What is Love in the Time of Malaria about?
The story unfolds in Khojpuri, a poor fictional country ruled by the despot King Bhadrabhoop. The regime blames mosquitoes for unrest. Scientist Hunshilal develops a vaccine or remedy against them, falls in love with colleague Parveen, and is drawn into a conspiracy against the king. The mosquito crisis becomes a political allegory about public fear, authoritarian rule, invented enemies, and dissent; it is the film’s framing, not a one-to-one portrait of a particular contemporary leader. Why did the film return to circulation?
For decades, the film had few opportunities to reach viewers. Scroll reported that it had no theatrical release, was shown several times on Doordarshan, and circulated in a few poor-quality VHS copies. Shah was already restoring it when the collective Potato Eaters approached him; the group made the film available on YouTube for a limited period, October 15–20, 2020. Scroll
The restored version then appeared in a sequence of scheduled screenings:

The film shifts among experimental cinema, documentary elements, street theatre, and musical sequences. Scroll reports that Dholakia wrote more than 40 tunes, with music running through much of the film. Shah explained that the hybrid approach emerged from the material rather than from a deliberate plan to make an avant-garde work: “We didn’t consciously set out to make an avant-garde film – it just happened because it was the best way to explore the themes.” Sanjiv Shah, quoted by Scroll, October 17, 2020
