For broad civil-rights movement history, start with PBS’s Eyes on the Prize; for constitutional structure, try Constitution USA with Peter Sagal or A More or Less Perfect Union. Netflix’s Amend: The Fight for America focuses on the Fourteenth Amendment, while PBS Passport offers the focused Equal Rights Amendment documentary Ratified. Streaming rights and episode windows vary by country and can change, so confirm each title on its official listing before you settle in.
Where to start: choose by subject
These documentaries approach constitutional history and civil rights from different angles. Pick the one that matches the question you want to explore rather than assuming that every title offers a complete survey.
| Title | Best fit | Format and viewing route documented by the official listing |
|---|---|---|
| Eyes on the Prize | Wide-ranging history of the civil-rights movement | Documentary series; PBS describes the series, but the page reviewed does not establish current episode availability in every territory. Check PBS’s live listing. PBS series overview |
| Constitution USA with Peter Sagal | How the Constitution operates in modern America | PBS series; an episode page lists “A More Perfect Union” at 53:10 and gives an April 1, 2028 expiration date. Check that page for current access. PBS program page |
| A More or Less Perfect Union | Constitutional liberty and civil-rights themes across periods | PBS/WNET series; its reviewed page says episodes stream, but does not establish that every episode remains available. About the series |
| Amend: The Fight for America | The Fourteenth Amendment and changing struggles over equality | Six-part Netflix docuseries; the linked title page is Netflix UK, not proof of availability elsewhere. Netflix UK title page |
| Ratified | The Equal Rights Amendment ratification fight | Focused documentary; PBS Independent Lens offers viewing with PBS Passport. PBS Independent Lens page |
| A More Perfect Union: Inspiring Civic & Civil Conversations Across America | Civic discussion of the American founding and its continuing relevance | One-hour civic special listed on PBS.org and the PBS app, with Apple TV and Amazon purchase links on its page. It is adjacent context, not a full civil-rights-history series. PBS program page |
The main distinction is scope. Eyes on the Prize follows a movement across key events; Constitution USA and A More or Less Perfect Union explore constitutional ideas and liberty; Amend follows one amendment through different equality struggles; and Ratified narrows in on one campaign. The civic special is a conversation about founding ideas rather than a movement-history survey.
For the full sweep of movement history: Eyes on the Prize
PBS describes Eyes on the Prize, produced by Blackside, as a documentary series tracing the civil-rights era from the Montgomery bus boycott through the Voting Rights Act. Julian Bond narrates, and the series uses interviews and historical footage. Its scope makes it the strongest starting point here if you want a movement-wide history rather than a single constitutional clause or campaign.

PBS’s episode descriptions include the Little Rock school integration struggle, sit-ins and Freedom Riders, the March on Washington, Mississippi voter registration, Selma, Black Power, and later organizing. That breadth also means it is not simply a legal explainer: it follows organizing, conflict, and political change as well as constitutional questions. The official overview documents the series and its subject, but does not confirm that all episodes are currently streamable in every country. Check PBS’s series overview for the current listing.
PBS notes that Juan Williams wrote a companion book with the same title. It can provide a reading path alongside the series; verify the edition and availability through the current listing before choosing it. PBS’s series page
For constitutional structure and modern debates
Constitution USA with Peter Sagal
PBS frames this series around a practical question: can the Constitution keep up with modern America? Peter Sagal travels around the country to explore where the Constitution operates and how it can both unite and divide the country. Listed topics include federalism, rights, equality, and the Fourteenth Amendment, so it is a useful choice when you want constitutional ideas connected to contemporary life.
PBS lists an episode called “A More Perfect Union” with a runtime of 53 minutes and 10 seconds. The page gives that episode an expiration date of April 1, 2028. An expiration date is a viewing-window detail, not a guarantee that every episode is available in every region; confirm the live episode page and your local listing before watching. A More or Less Perfect Union
PBS/WNET describes this series, hosted by Judge Douglas H. Ginsburg of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, as a personal exploration of the Constitution and struggles for liberty. The episode topics include the Constitution’s writing, the Bill of Rights, and threats to constitutional liberty; the Bill of Rights discussion also addresses civil rights.
The program combines firsthand perspectives with commentary from historians, legal scholars, business owners, judges, and ordinary citizens. The about page specifically notes descendants of enslaved people and people connected to pivotal civil-rights cases among those perspectives. That combination makes this a good fit if you want constitutional history presented through people’s experiences as well as expert interpretation. The page says episodes stream, but does not establish that every episode remains available now. See the series about page
Compared with Constitution USA, this series is particularly relevant if you want the Constitution’s founding, the Bill of Rights, and liberty debates connected to lived experience and civil-rights cases. The two are complementary choices, not interchangeable titles: use their episode descriptions to find the specific subject that interests you.

For the Fourteenth Amendment and equality: Amend
Netflix describes Amend: The Fight for America as a six-part docuseries about the Fourteenth Amendment. The amendment was ratified in 1868; Netflix’s synopsis presents its promise of liberty and equal protection for all persons as central to the series. The episodes range across Black citizenship and Frederick Douglass, resistance to equality after ratification, the civil-rights movement of the 1960s, women’s equality, same-sex marriage equality, and immigration.
This is the most direct choice in this group if you want one constitutional amendment traced through multiple eras and equality debates. Netflix’s linked catalog page is for the United Kingdom. A UK listing does not demonstrate that the title is available in the United States or any other country, so search the Netflix catalog for your own country before relying on it. Netflix UK title page

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

The six-part format makes Amend a more bounded choice than a broad movement-history series, while its subject reaches beyond a single movement or decade. Netflix’s synopsis says the Fourteenth Amendment promised liberty and equal protection for all persons in 1868; that is the series’ framing, not a viewing-access guarantee or a claim that every equality issue is covered exhaustively.
For the Equal Rights Amendment campaign: Ratified
PBS Independent Lens describes Ratified as a documentary about Virginia’s pivotal Equal Rights Amendment ratification battle. The campaign was led by Black women and supported by a multiracial, multigenerational coalition. It is a focused account of gender equality and amendment politics, not an all-purpose history of civil rights.
The PBS page offers viewing with PBS Passport. Check the official listing for the current viewing route and access conditions. PBS Independent Lens: Ratified
Choose this when the ERA campaign itself is your subject, rather than as a substitute for a survey such as Eyes on the Prize or an overview of the Fourteenth Amendment such as Amend. The Passport note is specific to the listing; do not assume the same access terms apply to other PBS titles.
For civic conversation: A More Perfect Union
A More Perfect Union: Inspiring Civic & Civil Conversations Across America is a PBS special about the American founding and the continuing relevance of founding ideas. PBS lists it on pbs.org and the PBS app, and its page provides Apple TV and Amazon purchase links.

How to check whether a title is streamable where you are
Streaming catalogs can differ by country, title, and episode. A program page that describes a series does not necessarily confirm current streaming rights for every episode, and an available episode may have a defined viewing window.
- Open the official program page linked above and look for a current watch, episode, or access option—not only a description of the program.
- For Netflix, check the title in the catalog for your own country. The UK page for Amend supports only a UK catalog claim.
- For PBS, distinguish ordinary PBS.org or app viewing from PBS Passport access and from a purchase link. The Ratified page specifies Passport, while the civic special’s page lists PBS and purchase routes.
- Check episode-level information when it appears. For example, PBS lists an expiration date for “A More Perfect Union” in Constitution USA; an episode listing may not describe access to the whole series.
- Before deciding what to watch, confirm both the title and the particular episode you want in your region. A general series overview, a country-specific Netflix page, and an episode page answer different questions about scope and access.
These listings do not establish current subscription prices, purchase prices, or one universal free-access route for these programs. Do not assume that a listed PBS program, Passport title, Netflix page, or store link has identical cost or access conditions; check the current platform listing before signing up or buying.

Is Ratified available on PBS?
PBS Independent Lens offers viewing with PBS Passport. Check the documentary’s current official page for access conditions; the listing does not establish that the same route or terms apply in every place or at every time.
How long is the Constitution USA episode “A More Perfect Union”?
PBS lists that episode at 53 minutes and 10 seconds and gives it an expiration date of April 1, 2028. Check the live episode page for current availability, since the listed window applies to that episode rather than guaranteeing access to the entire series.
Are these documentaries free to watch?
The reviewed listings identify different routes, including PBS.org or the PBS app, PBS Passport, Netflix, and purchase links for one PBS special. They do not establish a single current price or universal free-access option, so check the official listing for the title and your region.
The Bottom Line
For a movement-wide account, begin with Eyes on the Prize; for constitutional structure, compare Constitution USA with A More or Less Perfect Union; and for focused amendment stories, choose Amend or Ratified.
