There is no required first C. S. Lewis book. Choose by what you want to read: start The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for Narnia, Mere Christianity for Christian apologetics, The Screwtape Letters for a short work of fictional letters, Surprised by Joy for Lewis’s spiritual autobiography, Till We Have Faces for adult mythic fiction, or The Weight of Glory and Other Addresses for essays and a sermon. These are all reasonable entry points, and none requires you to read Lewis’s other books first.

Choose a first book by what you want from Lewis

C. S. Lewis wrote in several genres, so a single reading order would steer many readers toward the wrong first book. The Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College offers a selection of starting titles for precisely this reason: the best choice depends on whether you want fantasy, an argument about Christianity, fiction, autobiography, or essays.

If you want… Start with… Why it fits
The best-known Narnia story The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe It is the first book in the original publication sequence of the seven Narnia books and a direct way into Lewis’s children’s fantasy.
A broad introduction to Christian apologetics Mere Christianity The Wade Center describes it as an overview of beliefs Christians hold in common, compiled from Lewis’s BBC talks during World War II.
A compact fictional treatment of temptation The Screwtape Letters It takes the form of fictional letters from a senior demon to a junior tempter.
Lewis’s personal and spiritual story Surprised by Joy The Wade Center describes it as Lewis’s spiritual autobiography, covering his life from childhood to just after his conversion in 1931.
Adult fiction based on myth Till We Have Faces It is based on the story of Cupid and Psyche.
Essays and a sermon rather than a single narrative The Weight of Glory and Other Addresses The collection gives readers a route into Lewis’s nonfiction outside the shape of a single book-length argument.

The Wade Center’s descriptions are a useful way to match a book to an interest, not a ranking of Lewis’s works. You do not need to complete one category before moving to another. A reader can begin with Narnia, read an apologetics book next, and leave the autobiography for later.

That flexibility matters because “Where should I start?” can mean several different things. You might be asking for the most recognizable Lewis title, the most direct introduction to his Christian arguments, or simply a book that fits the kind of reading you already enjoy. Those are different aims, and they need not point to the same book. If you want fantasy, start with the story; if you want ideas argued directly, choose the apologetics route; if you want an imaginative form, choose one of the fictional works.

Lewis’s official biography says he wrote more than thirty books, spanning multiple categories. That figure is a useful reminder that his books are not one long sequence. There is no need to turn a first read into a commitment to tackle every genre or to begin at the start of a supposed master list. Pick a book with a clear reason for choosing it, then decide whether to continue based on what you enjoyed.

Should you read the Narnia books in publication or chronological order?

The seven Narnia books have two familiar sequences. Publication order follows when the books appeared; chronological order follows the sequence of events within Narnia. Both are defensible, and Lewis is reported to have suggested that chronological order might be easiest. In a letter quoted by the official C. S. Lewis site, he also wrote that “perhaps it does not matter very much in which order anyone reads them.”

Position Publication order Chronological order of Narnia events
1 The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe The Magician’s Nephew
2 Prince Caspian The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
3 The Voyage of the Dawn Treader The Horse and His Boy
4 The Silver Chair Prince Caspian
5 The Horse and His Boy The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
6 The Magician’s Nephew The Silver Chair
7 The Last Battle The Last Battle

Choose publication order for the first-publication experience

The official C. S. Lewis site’s essay, “The Narnian Order of Things,” posted August 20, 2013, argues for beginning with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. In that sequence, readers encounter the story as it was first published, and The Magician’s Nephew later works as a prequel: its origin revelations gain meaning after readers have already encountered Narnia. The essay also argues that The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe makes a more immediate first book and preserves the mystery surrounding Aslan’s introduction.

That is the essay author’s case for publication order, not a binding instruction from Lewis. It is a particularly suitable choice if you want your first encounter to follow the order in which readers originally met the books. The prequel comes later in that route, so the series first introduces Narnia through the book that originally opened the sequence and only later turns back to its origins.

Choose chronological order to follow Narnia’s internal timeline

The Library of Congress National Library Service presents the books in chronological order and describes that sequence as the order scholars understand Lewis intended. Beginning with The Magician’s Nephew puts the origin story first, before the events of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

The official-site essay also records Lewis’s reported view that chronological order might be the easiest way to read the series. If following the fictional timeline matters more to you than preserving the books’ original sequence of discovery, chronological order is a reasonable choice. This route gives the earliest Narnian events first, then moves forward through the internal timeline.

How to decide between the two

  • Choose publication order if you want the original sequence and the later prequel’s discoveries to arrive after the earlier books.
  • Choose chronological order if you would rather begin with the earliest events in Narnia.
  • If you already have a numbered edition or set, check which sequence it uses before starting. Numbering can reflect one order rather than the other.

Whichever route you take, use it consistently through the series. There is no need to interrupt your reading to reconcile the books into one supposedly mandatory order. The two lists differ most at the beginning: The Magician’s Nephew is first chronologically but sixth by publication, while The Last Battle is last in both. If you are buying or borrowing a numbered collection, those differences are practical, not merely theoretical: the printed sequence may be chronological even if you expected publication order.

Start with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for Narnia

If you want Lewis’s famous children’s fantasy, this is the clearest starting point. It opens the original publication sequence, and the official-site essay specifically favors it as an immediate first book for new readers. From there, choose publication or chronological order and continue through the corresponding list above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Starting here does not commit you to reading every Narnia book before trying Lewis’s nonfiction. The books are one route into his work, not a prerequisite for the others. If the first book makes you curious about Narnia’s beginnings, The Magician’s Nephew is the prequel; in publication order it comes sixth, while in chronological order it comes first.

Narnia is also the obvious choice if you want the title many readers recognize first. The official biography reports that more than 100 million Narnia copies have been sold, though the retrieved biography passage does not date that figure. It is best treated as an undated figure, not a current-year sales count. The number speaks to the series’ reach, but it does not mean that every reader should start there: choose Narnia because you want fantasy, not because popularity creates a required order.

Start with Mere Christianity for Christian apologetics

Choose Mere Christianity if your main interest is Lewis’s arguments about Christianity. The Wade Center describes it as an overview of beliefs Christians hold in common and explains that it compiles Lewis’s World War II BBC talks. That makes it a better match for a reader seeking an introduction to his Christian apologetics than beginning with a novel or a collection of essays.

It is one starting point, not a requirement to read Lewis’s fiction through a theological lens. If you came to Lewis for Narnia or adult fiction, you can begin there instead and approach Mere Christianity when you specifically want his nonfiction arguments. Conversely, if you came for the arguments, there is no need to read the novels first as preparation.

The distinction between this title and The Weight of Glory and Other Addresses may help if you know you want nonfiction but are unsure which form suits you. The Wade Center characterizes Mere Christianity as an overview of shared Christian beliefs drawn from the BBC talks; The Weight of Glory is a collection of essays and a sermon. Choose the former for a broad, book-length introduction to Lewis’s apologetic work, and the latter if a collection of shorter addresses sounds more appealing.

Start with The Screwtape Letters for a short fictional work

The Screwtape Letters is a strong option if you want fiction with a clear formal premise rather than a series or autobiography. The Wade Center describes it as fictional letters from a senior demon to a junior tempter. That description identifies the book’s device without requiring you to read Lewis’s other work first.

Choose it when a fictional treatment of temptation appeals more than a broad presentation of Christian beliefs. If what you want is Lewis’s direct apologetic case, Mere Christianity is the more fitting entry point; if you want fiction, begin with the letters. The choice is not between an “easy” and a “serious” Lewis: it is between different forms of writing and different kinds of interest.

Start with Surprised by Joy for Lewis’s life and conversion

For a personal route into Lewis, read Surprised by Joy. The Wade Center identifies it as his spiritual autobiography and describes its scope as childhood through the period just after his conversion in 1931. It is therefore the most direct choice among these starting titles if your question is how Lewis’s own life and spiritual journey fit into his writing.

It is not the only way to approach his books, and it is not necessary background for Narnia or the apologetics titles. Choose it because you want an autobiographical account, rather than simply because it appears to explain the author. The scope given by the Wade Center is useful when deciding whether it fits: it covers childhood through just after the conversion, rather than serving as an account of every stage of Lewis’s life.

Start with Till We Have Faces for adult mythic fiction

Till We Have Faces is the Wade Center’s suggested route for readers drawn to adult fiction rooted in myth. It is based on Cupid and Psyche, so it offers a different starting point from the Narnia books. If that premise and category are what you want, there is no need to read the children’s fantasy first.

This recommendation is especially helpful for readers who want fiction but are not looking for a children’s fantasy or a series. The available description supports a clear choice by category—adult mythic fiction based on Cupid and Psyche—without implying that the book depends on Narnia or on prior knowledge of Lewis’s other works.

Start with The Weight of Glory and Other Addresses for essays

If you prefer essays to a continuous narrative, consider The Weight of Glory and Other Addresses. Its title signals a collection rather than a single story or autobiography, and the Wade Center includes it among the possible starting works. It is an option for readers who want to meet Lewis through shorter nonfiction pieces instead of beginning with a book-length overview of Christian belief.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, this is the choice for a reader whose first preference is nonfiction in essay or address form. It need not precede Mere Christianity, and Mere Christianity need not precede it. The better question is whether you want the overview of common Christian beliefs associated with the BBC talks or a collection of addresses.

Buying or borrowing a first book

Because the choice here is a specific book to read, an individual copy of the recommended title is a natural next step. If you already know you want the complete Narnia series, a seven-book set may be convenient; first check whether its volume numbering follows publication order or chronological order. That small check can prevent a mismatch between your plan and the set’s arrangement.

Lewis’s official site lists Narnia books and box sets or special editions, and the Wade Center identifies specific titles suitable as entry points. Editions, availability, and prices can vary, so this guide does not prescribe a particular format or price. If a publisher or bookseller link is included alongside a recommendation, it should be relevant to that title or set, and any affiliate relationship should be disclosed according to the publisher’s policies.

There is no need to buy a complete collection before you know which part of Lewis’s work interests you. A single starting title lets you test the fit; a series set makes sense for readers already committed to following Narnia. Because the set’s order can vary, check that detail before purchase rather than assuming the numbers necessarily reflect publication sequence.

A practical first-reading plan

  1. Name your interest. Pick fantasy, apologetics, fictional letters, autobiography, mythic fiction, or essays before choosing a title.
  2. Choose the matching starting book. Use the decision table rather than trying to begin with an imagined “complete works” order.
  3. If you pick Narnia, select a sequence. Use publication order for the original sequence of discovery or chronological order for the internal timeline.
  4. Check the edition’s numbering. If you have a boxed set or numbered volumes, verify which sequence the numbers represent so you do not mistake an edition’s arrangement for a universal rule.
  5. Let the next book follow your interest. After a Narnia book, continue in the same sequence if you want the whole series; otherwise, move to whichever genre or subject now interests you.

This plan deliberately avoids a single prescribed route through all of Lewis’s books. It gives you a decision first, an order only where one is useful, and room to change direction. If you begin with Mere Christianity and later want fiction, choose fiction then; if you begin with Narnia and want Lewis’s own life story, move to Surprised by Joy. A first book is a point of entry, not a contract to read the rest in a fixed sequence.

How broad is Lewis’s body of work?

The official C. S. Lewis biography says he wrote more than thirty books. That breadth helps explain why an all-works reading order is not especially useful for a new reader: a route through Narnia, a route through apologetics, and a route through fiction answer different reading interests. Start with the category you actually want, then expand if a particular book gives you a reason to do so.

The same official biography reports more than 100 million Narnia copies sold. The figure is not dated in the passage reviewed for this guide, so it should not be read as a sales total for a particular year or as a live sales estimate. It establishes the scale of the series’ readership without changing the practical recommendation: for fantasy, begin with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe; for another interest, choose the matching title.

The available sources establish useful starting routes and Narnia order distinctions, but they do not establish a universal ranking of Lewis’s books, a measured survey of what readers ask most often, or current availability and pricing for particular editions. This is a practical guide rather than a complete bibliography. A conversational question such as “What C. S. Lewis book should I read first?” can be answered with the interest-based choices above, without pretending that one answer fits everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What C. S. Lewis book should I read first?

Choose by interest: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for Narnia, Mere Christianity for Christian apologetics, The Screwtape Letters for fictional letters about temptation, Surprised by Joy for autobiography, Till We Have Faces for adult mythic fiction, or The Weight of Glory and Other Addresses for essays and a sermon. There is no required all-works order.

Should I read the Narnia books in publication or chronological order?

Both are reasonable. Publication order begins with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and lets The Magician’s Nephew work as a prequel later. Chronological order begins with The Magician’s Nephew and follows Narnia’s internal timeline. The official C. S. Lewis site’s essay argues for publication order’s first-book hook and preserved mystery; the Library of Congress National Library Service presents chronological order.

Is The Magician’s Nephew the first Narnia book?

It is first in chronological order of Narnia’s events, but sixth in publication order. If you want to follow the internal timeline, begin with it; if you want the original publication sequence, begin with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Do I need to read Narnia before Mere Christianity or Lewis’s other books?

No. The recommended books cover different genres and interests, and they do not need to be read in sequence. You can start with the nonfiction, autobiography, or adult fiction without completing Narnia first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is Mere Christianity based on?

The Wade Center describes it as an overview of beliefs Christians hold in common, compiled from Lewis’s BBC talks during World War II.

How many books did C. S. Lewis write?

The official C. S. Lewis biography says he wrote more than thirty books. The same biography reports more than 100 million Narnia copies sold, but the passage reviewed for this guide does not date that sales figure.

Should I buy a Narnia set or start with one book?

If you are still deciding whether Narnia is the right route, start with an individual title such as The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. If you are ready to read the full series, a seven-book set may be convenient; check whether its numbering uses publication or chronological order before buying.

The Bottom Line

There is no single correct first C. S. Lewis book. Choose the title that matches your interest, and if you choose Narnia, decide whether you want publication order or chronological order. The key is to begin with the kind of Lewis you actually want to read.
