Yes—real-life Quidditch is still played, though the sport’s governing bodies now call it quadball. In the United States, begin with US Quadball’s team directory and season calendar; outside the U.S., use the International Quadball Association’s play page to find your national organization. The 20 U.S. entries below are team or tournament-region leads, not verified permanent practice addresses or guaranteed drop-in sessions. Contact a team before traveling.
What real-life Quidditch is called—and how it is played
US Quadball and the International Quadball Association (IQA) use the name quadball. “Quidditch,” “real-life Quidditch” and “Muggle Quidditch” remain useful search terms when you are looking for a team. The IQA says USQ, MLQ and IQA decided to change the name in July 2022 so the sport could continue to grow: IQA: Play Quadball.
Quadball is a mixed-gender contact sport that combines elements of rugby, dodgeball and tag. Players keep a broom between their legs—not a flying one. In US Quadball’s explanation of its rules, chasers and keepers use the quadball to score through hoops; beaters throw dodgeballs to put opponents out until they touch their own hoops; and seekers try to capture a flag carried by a neutral flag runner. USQ describes teams of up to 21 athletes, with six or seven players from each team on the field. Its explanation says the flag is worth 35 points and describes a set-score mechanic. These details reflect USQ’s rules presentation; other leagues may differ. See USQ’s how-to-play guide and USQ’s rules.
20 U.S. places to investigate
The list combines 2026 US Quadball qualifier regions with club names appearing in the qualifier announcement. Regions identify where an event was assigned, not necessarily where a team practices. City and regional labels inferred from team names are leads, not confirmed addresses. Check the team’s current listing and ask whether it welcomes new players before making plans.

USQ’s team directory is updated weekly during registration, according to the organization. Its calendar lists dated activities such as tryouts, open practices, pickup games, meets and tournaments. Listings can change, so contact the team before traveling. USQ says its annual championship draws over 50 teams and over 1,000 athletes each year; that is the organization’s description of its event, not a count of local teams or a figure specific to the 2026 edition. See the USQ homepage.
How to find and join a team
In the United States
- Open USQ’s All Teams directory and look for teams within a realistic travel distance. If none is listed nearby, USQ invites prospective players to email its membership team about starting one.
- Check the current-season calendar for a tryout, open practice or pickup rather than assuming a tournament is a regular session. Confirm the address and date with the team.
- Ask whether the activity accepts newcomers, what age or division eligibility applies, whether registration is required and what equipment to bring.
- Compare travel distance, public-transit access, season timing and whether the team’s expectations are recreational or competitive.
USQ’s announcement dated September 1, 2026, says 2026–27 registration opened and that memberships are valid through June 30, 2027. The announcement covers college and club teams, players, coaches, officials and tournament directors, and says developing teams can register as unofficial teams while working toward official membership. Fees and eligibility depend on the season and division; consult the current registration information and gameplay policies rather than assuming one rule applies to every team.

Outside the United States
Start with the IQA’s play page and follow the link to your national organization. The IQA says it has more than 30 official member nations, but that count can change. National associations run their own competitions, and rules may differ from USQ’s. Contact the local organization for current clubs, practice schedules and eligibility.
What to ask before your first practice
- Is this a practice, tryout, pickup game or tournament? An event listing or qualifier assignment does not guarantee a public practice.
- Where and when should I arrive? Confirm the current address, start time and any changes directly with the team.
- Can a beginner attend? Ask about newcomer policy, age requirements, registration and any division-specific eligibility.
- What should I bring? A Boston Lobsters tryout listing on USQ’s 2026 season calendar asked attendees to bring a white and a colored shirt, sneakers or cleats, water and a mouthguard. That is one team’s event-specific list, not a universal kit requirement. Ask your host team what applies to its field and session.
- What kind of participation does the team expect? Find out whether it is recreational or competitive, how often it meets and whether there are costs or season commitments.
Rules and eligibility vary by league and season
USQ says its rulebook is used in college and club play in the United States. IQA member leagues may use the USQ book, but individual leagues can make deviations under their own rulesets. USQ’s 2026–27 policies also distinguish competitive divisions and set eligibility requirements. If you are new, you do not need to master the rulebook before contacting a team; ask which rules and requirements apply to the session or competition you plan to attend.
