No brand is the best action figure maker for everyone. The right choice depends on the franchise and character you want, the scale and articulation you need, whether the figure is for play or display, your budget, and where you live. Start with those questions, then use official brand catalogs to confirm which line carries the figure, and compare individual retailer listings before you buy.
Why no single brand wins
Action figure brands sell distinct lines, and each line covers different characters, sizes and levels of detail. Hasbro’s Marvel Legends and Star Wars The Black Series, Mattel’s Masters of the Universe range and Bandai Spirits’ Tamashii Nations lines do not compete on the same terms, so a ranking would mostly reflect which franchise a writer happens to favor. The official product pages describe what each figure contains; none of them is a comparative test of quality, sales or value, and this guide does not claim otherwise.
A useful way to think about it is to treat “best” as a fit question. A collector who wants a specific Star Wars character in a posable six-inch figure has a different best option from someone who wants a display piece from a 1980s cartoon.
The starting lines to check
These four families are verifiable starting points because each has an official catalog or product page you can read directly.

Marvel Legends (Hasbro)
Hasbro’s official listing for the Marvel Legends Black Widow figure describes a 6-inch, fully articulated figure with seven accessories. The same listing carries an age label of 4+ and a warning about small parts for children under three. If you collect Marvel characters and want accessories and full poseability, this is the line to compare first.
Star Wars The Black Series (Hasbro)
Hasbro presents The Black Series as a 6-inch figure line. Its official Ahsoka listing specifies multiple articulation points and two lightsabers, with age and small-parts labeling. Like Marvel Legends, the line is aimed at collectors who want character-accurate Star Wars figures, but the accessory count and articulation vary by product, so check the specific character’s listing.
Masters of the Universe (Mattel)
Mattel’s official catalog lists Masters of the Universe toys under several sub-lines, including Origins and Masterverse. Figures in these lines differ in style and product detail, so the sub-line name tells you more about the look than the brand name does. Mattel’s catalog shows the current assortment, while prices and availability change over time.

Buyers outside Japan are advised to confirm release dates with local retailers and sales sites, because release timing and availability depend on the item and the country.

How to compare two figures before you buy
Compare figures at the individual-product level, not the line level. The same brand can release a 6-inch figure with a dozen accessories and a 6-inch figure with one.

- Ideal for Kids and Collectors: Whether for imaginative play or collectability, this Woody figure appeals to both young Toy Story fans and enthusiasts alike.
- Confirm the character or version. Find the exact name on the maker’s own page, including the costume or series, since one character often appears in several releases.
- Check the listed scale. “Six inch” is a label, not a guarantee of fit. Compare the listed height against figures you already own before assuming they will stand together.
- Read the articulation and accessories list. Official listings state the articulation points and included items; these numbers are the most practical way to compare poseability.
- Read the age and warning text. Display-oriented figures can still carry small parts. If a child under three may be near the figure, follow the manufacturer’s warning.
- Compare the delivered price. Add shipping and any import charges to the item price, since the cheapest listing is not always the lowest total.
Marvel Legends or The Black Series: which should you collect?
Both lines are Hasbro products with 6-inch figures according to their official pages, so the choice usually comes down to franchise rather than size. Choose Marvel Legends if your collection is built around Marvel characters. Choose The Black Series if you want Star Wars characters. If you collect both franchises, check each product’s scale and accessory count separately, because the pages do not guarantee that figures from the two lines will match in every detail.

Brand and official catalog routes
Mattel, Hasbro and Bandai Spirits all publish official product catalogs or shop routes. Use these to confirm which line a figure belongs to and what it includes. Brand sites do not guarantee that a product is in stock or sold in your region, so treat them as a starting point for identification and for checking whether a direct purchase route exists.

Specialist collector shops
Specialist retailers such as BigBadToyStore and Entertainment Earth carry collector-focused stock and frequently list preorders alongside in-stock items. Entertainment Earth’s Black Series category page, for example, shows both in-stock figures and preorders. Check the listing’s status before assuming a figure can ship immediately.
Secondhand and older figures
For older or scarce figures, judge two things separately: the condition of the item and the reputation of the seller. A low price on a figure that is missing accessories or has packaging damage is not a bargain. Check the included accessories against the maker’s listing for that exact figure.
Preorders, regions and release timing
A preorder is a listing for a figure that has not shipped yet, so the price and ship date may change. Imported lines add another layer. Bandai’s own guidance tells buyers outside Japan to confirm release dates with local sellers, and the same caution applies to any line that is released on a different schedule in your country.
Buying checklist
- The exact character, version and franchise match what you want.
- The listed scale fits the figures you already own.
- The articulation and accessory count meet your use: posing, display or play.
- The age and small-parts warnings suit the people who will handle the figure.
- The delivered total, including shipping, is within budget.
- The listing shows whether the figure is in stock or on preorder, with a realistic ship date.
- For used figures, the condition and the seller’s reputation are both acceptable.
Brand catalogs, retailer locators and product listings change over time, so confirm the details on the live page on the day you buy.
