How the cast changed over 11 seasons
Cheers ran on NBC from 1982 to 1993, set in a Boston bar where owner Sam Malone (Ted Danson) traded jokes with regulars Norm Peterson and Cliff Clavin, while Carla Tortelli (Rhea Perlman) worked behind the bar. Three changes shaped the ensemble:
- 1985: Nicholas Colasanto, who played Coach, died, and Woody Harrelson joined as Woody Boyd.
- 1987: Kirstie Alley replaced Shelley Long as Rebecca Howe.
- After the series: Frasier Crane, played by Kelsey Grammer, anchored a successful spin-off.
George Wendt’s legacy
Wendt’s most durable public identity is Norm. The role turned repetition into comedy: the familiar entrance, the same stool, and the running exchanges with the other regulars. The Associated Press described Wendt as an actor with “Everyman charm,” and reported six straight Emmy nominations for supporting actor in a comedy series, from 1984 through 1989.

Norm as a repeated joke
Norm worked because the show treated his presence as a fixed point. Viewers did not need a new plot to find him funny; they needed only to see him arrive and settle in. That is why the role is still the first thing most people name when they recall Wendt, even though his later work was extensive.
Second City, stage, and work beyond the bar
Wendt spent six years with Chicago’s Second City improv troupe before his television success. His later stage work included Art, Hairspray, Elf, 12 Angry Men, and regional productions. Describing his own approach, he told the Associated Press: “I think comedy is my long suit, for sure.”

Death and family statement
Wendt died at home in Los Angeles in May 2025. In its report, the Associated Press quoted a family statement: “George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him.” The report does not name the individual family member who issued it, so the statement should be attributed to Wendt’s family.

| Series finale ratings (1993) | 45.5 rating, 64 audience share | Television Academy retrospective, 1997 |
The two Emmy totals conflict, and the cited sources do not explain why. If the exact count is not essential, describe Cheers as a multiple award-winning sitcom rather than choosing one total.

The Television Academy’s series history says the show “is often cited for successfully blending elements of romance and soap opera into the sitcom format.” That blend depended on continuity: ongoing romantic plots, recurring callbacks, and characters who developed across seasons rather than resetting each week.

Parade quotes writer Sam Simon on the show’s design: “It was something bigger than a sitcom. It was a sweeping narrative.” The same article credits the long-term arc approach to creators Glen and Les Charles and James Burrows. This is a secondary outlet quoting Simon, so attribute the line to Simon as reported by Parade.
Wendt’s legacy rests on that design. Norm was not a plot engine; he was a constant, and the series’ willingness to keep a few fixed faces in the same place for eleven seasons is part of why the bar still reads as a real place to return to.
