The most recent detailed reporting located on Falcon Heene is TIME’s July 2025 coverage of the Netflix documentary Trainwreck: Balloon Boy. In it, Falcon is described as 22, and his family is reported to have moved from Colorado to Florida. Nothing located confirms where he lives in October 2026, what he does for work, or whether the family still lives in Florida. The answer below separates what is documented from what is only reported or unverified.

Where Falcon Heene is now

The latest dated status is this: as of TIME’s July 2025 report, Falcon was 22, had appeared with his parents in the documentary, and the family had relocated from Colorado to Florida. TIME reports the move was made to seek more anonymity. No later account of his residence or occupation was found, so any detail about his daily life, job, or location after mid-2025 should be treated as unconfirmed.

Falcon’s own position has changed over time. In the 2025 documentary he reflects on being six years old during the incident and says he has little direct memory of the day. He also feels that his words as a child were taken out of context and assembled into a larger story than he intended.

What happened on October 15, 2009

On that day the Heenes reported that their homemade helium balloon had gone aloft with six-year-old Falcon inside. The balloon was later found empty. Falcon was found hiding in the garage attic of the family home. During the live aftermath, Falcon said, “You had said that we did this for a show,” a remark that intensified suspicion about the event.

Within days, the reported claim was shown to be false, and the incident became a national story about a staged event, not a rescue.

The legal outcome

The Los Angeles Times reported the outcome of the criminal case in 2009. Richard Heene pleaded guilty to attempting to influence a public official. Mayumi Heene pleaded guilty to making a false report to law enforcement.

Parent Plea (as reported in 2009) Custody at sentencing (as reported in 2009) Probation and conditions
Richard Heene Guilty: attempting to influence a public official 90 days, including jail and work release Four years’ probation and community-service requirements
Mayumi Heene Guilty: making a false report to law enforcement 20 days Four years’ probation and community-service requirements

At sentencing, the judge’s conclusion was reported in plain terms: “This, in simple terms, was an elaborate hoax.” Chief Judge Stephen J. Schapanski also said: “What this case is about is deception and exploitation — exploitation of their children, exploitation of the media, exploitation of the emotions of people. And it was about money.” These are contemporaneous statements reported in 2009, not new comments from Falcon or his parents.

TIME reports that Colorado’s governor pardoned the Heenes in 2020. The report describes the pardon as the governor’s decision, based on reasoning that the state should move on. A pardon of this kind does not change the record of the guilty pleas, and it is not a finding that the incident did not happen as the authorities described it.

Falcon’s account as an adult

In the 2025 documentary, Falcon recounts that he tried to climb into the balloon, was yelled at, went back into the house, hid in the garage attic, and fell asleep. He says he remembers feeling bad about doing something wrong. He also reflects that adults took what he said at six and built it into something much bigger. Two lines from the documentary, as quoted by TIME, capture his view of the hiding place: “There’s a little compartment there that’s perfect for my size, you know,” and “I wanted to live in there.”

His statement: “I remember feeling bad that I did something wrong. But just looking back on it now, I was six-years-old and all these adults took whatever I said they were able to string together what they thought was something else and make it so, so big. It’s baffling.”

This is Falcon’s personal recollection, given as an adult. It is not independent evidence about what his parents intended.

The competing accounts, side by side

The incident is still discussed in four distinct ways. These should be kept separate, because each answers a different question.

Question What the record or source establishes
What the court record establishes Both parents pleaded guilty to charges arising from the incident and received jail sentences in 2009 (Los Angeles Times, 2009).
What investigators concluded about motive Larimer County Sheriff’s Office investigator Bob Heffernan, quoted in the 2025 documentary and TIME’s report: “I also learned that the Heenes had been working very hard to try to get themselves a TV show. It would be helpful if they ended up in the news or got their name out there somewhere. I think that’s what their motivation was for this whole hoax.” This is his view, as quoted, not a neutral finding.
What the family continues to say In the 2025 documentary, Richard and Mayumi Heene continue to reject the publicity-hoax explanation (TIME, July 2025).
What Falcon recalls as an adult He has little direct memory of the day, feels his childhood words were taken out of context, and describes the event as something adults blew out of proportion (TIME, July 2025).

The guilty pleas and sentences are the legal record. The investigator’s motive theory and the family’s denial are positions, and Falcon’s recollection is a personal account given decades after the event.

The 2025 documentary

Netflix released Trainwreck: Balloon Boy on July 15, 2025, according to TIME. It features Falcon and his parents, and it revisits how the family, journalists, and investigators have interpreted the incident. TIME also reports that Richard Heene is still conducting experiments and teasing a new invention in the film. That teaser is not evidence that a product or business exists.

Current availability on Netflix was not verified for this article. Check the Netflix title page directly for whether the film is available in your region.

Older updates, as dated context

  • 2014 (SBS/Quartz): reported that the Heene brothers toured Florida as Heene Boyz.
  • 2019 (ABC News): reported that Falcon had little recollection of the day and was in a heavy-metal band with his brothers.

Neither report establishes that the band or the touring is active today.

What is not established

  • Falcon Heene’s current city, residence, or whether the family still lives in Florida after July 2025.
  • His occupation or day-to-day life.
  • Any current business, product, or public project connected to the family beyond what the 2025 documentary reports.
  • Whether the documentary is currently available on Netflix in a given country.

How to check for a newer update

  1. Search the exact name with the year, for example “Falcon Heene 2026”, and sort results by date.
  2. Look for reporting by named outlets that cite a dated interview or a court or official record, rather than social posts or aggregator pages.
  3. Confirm any claim about a move, job, or business with a second independent source before treating it as current.

Until a newer, dated source appears, the July 2025 TIME report remains the most recent detailed account of Falcon’s life.
