But the museum’s listing does not prove that its car appeared in the film. Several different Trans Ams are tied to the movie and Burt Reynolds, and their histories should not be conflated.
Where can you see a Trans Am associated with the film?
The Hollywood Star Cars Museum lists a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am on its Smokey and the Bandit page. The museum is at 914 Parkway, Gatlinburg, TN 37738. Its listing makes Gatlinburg the clearest present-day destination for a Trans Am the museum associates with the movie, but it does not provide provenance showing that this particular car was used during filming. Is the museum car the original movie car?
That is not established by the museum listing. The evidence available identifies several distinct cars—a museum display, a car Burt Reynolds owned for personal use, and cars associated with promotion and auctions—but does not confirm any of them as the surviving on-screen original. A car matching the movie’s appearance is not proof of screen use.
Which other Trans Ams are often confused with it?
| Car | Model year and role | What the record establishes | Last location or status established by the cited account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hollywood Star Cars Museum display | 1977; associated with Smokey and the Bandit | The museum lists the car and identifies the film, but does not document on-screen use. | Listed at Hollywood Star Cars Museum, 914 Parkway, Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Museum listing |
| Reynolds’s personal car | 1978; acquired by Burt Reynolds for personal use, not a stunt car | The International Motorsports Hall of Fame described it as Reynolds’s personal car and said it was not a recycled movie stunt car. | The Hall said it was displaying the car in an announcement dated October 3, 2014; that report does not verify its present location. International Motorsports Hall of Fame |
| Promotional car sold in 2016 | 1977; used to promote the film | Barrett-Jackson described it as a PHS-documented promotional car and reported its sale at the 2016 Scottsdale auction. | The cited account does not establish its buyer’s current ownership or the car’s present location. Barrett-Jackson account |
| Another Reynolds-owned car sold in 2022 | 1977; a promotional vehicle later gifted to Reynolds | Barrett-Jackson’s 2022 lot listing describes Reynolds’s ownership and records the car’s sale that year. | The listing does not establish its current whereabouts. It is distinct from the 2016 promotional car and the Hall’s 1978 car. Barrett-Jackson lot listing |
Why might a movie car called a 1977 Trans Am be a 1976?
The film presents the Bandit’s car as a 1977 Trans Am, but filming took place before the 1977 model year was available. Carlisle Events reports that Pontiac supplied 1976 cars fitted with 1977-style front clips. As a result, the styling alone cannot establish a car’s factory model year.
