Is Taylor Sheridan responsible for the long wait?
There is no reported evidence establishing one definitive cause for the wait—or showing that Sheridan’s workload alone delayed the film. The available account points to a development process with multiple drafts and changing circumstances, rather than a single, officially stated explanation.
TheWrap says different writers worked on the third chapter over the years, including Christopher McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen, who penned an earlier draft. It also notes that Sheridan went on to oversee a large television operation for Paramount+. That context may help explain why the project took time, but it does not prove that his schedule caused the delay.

In 2023, producer Molly Smith said the team was “very close” and ready to proceed once the strikes ended and their path cleared. She also said Sheridan had always envisioned the series as a trilogy. Those remarks describe the situation at that time, not the current screenplay or package. Black Label Media republished Smith’s interview.
What changed in the latest updates?
Josh Brolin said in August 2026 that the film “is happening” and production would begin “soon,” according to The Independent. At that point, the article said the cast, director and Sheridan’s writing role were still unconfirmed. The October 5 report added the newer cast and creative details.

There is also a discrepancy in a Film & Television Industry Alliance Production List entry updated October 6, 2026. It labels the project pre-production, lists Sheridan as writer and gives the shoot date as TBA. That conflicts with TheWrap’s report naming Knight and McKinley and targeting early 2027 for production. Because the database entry is secondary and the difference has not been reconciled, the current creative details here follow TheWrap’s trade report.
