Princess Diana is buried on the central island of The Oval, an ornamental lake at Althorp, the Spencer family estate in Northamptonshire. Her burial followed a private interment at the estate. The nearby memorial temple is not her grave.
Where is Princess Diana’s grave?
Diana’s grave is on an island in the middle of The Oval at Althorp. The Royal Family’s account states that she was buried on the island after her coffin was taken to the estate for a private interment. It describes the site as “sanctified ground on an island in the centre of an ornamental lake.” The Royal Family’s biography of Diana

Historic England’s record of Althorp describes The Oval as a shallow, tree-fringed pool with a central island. It records Diana’s burial there in 1997 and notes a memorial urn on the island.
Is the memorial temple her grave?
No. The grave is on the island; the temple is a separate memorial on the bank at the north-east end of The Oval. Historic England says the late-eighteenth-century temple was furnished with inscriptions and other memorials to Diana in 1997–98. Historic England’s listing and Northamptonshire’s Historic Environment Record distinguish these features.

Can visitors reach the island or grave?
The Royal Family and heritage records establish where Diana was buried, but they do not establish current visitor access to the island or grave. Her interment was private, and these sources do not confirm whether visitors can approach the burial site. Check Althorp’s official visitor information for current access arrangements before planning a visit.
