Lucille Ball’s 40-carat aquamarine engagement ring has not been located publicly. A newspaper archive report says it was stolen from the hotel suite she shared with Desi Arnaz in Chicago in June 1950; later coverage says the stolen jewelry was never recovered. Its present location—and what ultimately happened to it—remain unknown.
What happened to the ring?
A Daily Independent Journal archive entry dated June 2, 1950, reported that a prowler entered Ball and Arnaz’s Chicago hotel suite while the couple was away and stole about $6,000 in jewelry. The listed items included Ball’s aquamarine engagement ring and a 62-carat aquamarine pendant. This is an archive report of the incident, not a verified account of the ring’s subsequent whereabouts.
Later coverage says the stolen jewelry was never recovered and that no arrests were made. No current owner, auction appearance, or museum holding for the ring has been identified in that reporting.
What kind of ring was it?
In Love, Lucy, Ball described it as “the forty-carat aquamarine engagement ring Desi had given me,” wording reproduced by AOL/InStyle in its 2026 coverage. Later reporting describes the stone as emerald-cut and set in platinum. Those are reported design details; the cited coverage does not provide independent gemological documentation.

Was it the same as Ball’s wedding ring?
No. The aquamarine was her engagement ring, distinct from the brass wedding band Ball received when she and Arnaz eloped. The Library of Congress dates their marriage to November 30, 1940. Its biographical material establishes the marriage date, not the aquamarine ring’s provenance.
Was the ring ever found—or broken up and resold?
Later reporting says the jewelry was not recovered, and the ring’s fate after the theft is undocumented. One suggested possibility is that the stone was broken up and resold, but no evidence cited in that reporting establishes that this happened. It should not be treated as the ring’s known fate.
