Grace Kelly’s 1956 wedding dress is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its collection status does not mean it is currently on display: the museum says works can be off view, and costume and textile objects rotate for conservation. The title’s often-repeated “$786,000” figure is not verified by the museum’s records.
Where is Grace Kelly’s wedding dress now?
The Philadelphia Museum of Art holds the gown and lists it as a 1956 collection object. The museum’s Costume and Textiles overview also identifies it as one of the collection’s notable objects. View the museum’s collection record.
Kelly donated the dress to the museum soon after her wedding to Prince Rainier III on April 19, 1956. The gown was a gift to Kelly from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), designed by Academy Award-winning costume designer Helen Rose and made by MGM’s wardrobe department in Culver City, California. The museum’s historical exhibition page describes its background and construction.
Can you see the dress at the museum?
Its presence in the collection does not confirm that it is currently on view. The museum cautions that individual works may be off view, and costume and textile pieces are displayed for limited periods because of light sensitivity and conservation needs. A 2006 exhibition, “Fit for a Princess,” ran from April 1 to May 21; that past show is not evidence of present display. Likewise, a 2018 museum announcement described the dress as not on view at that time, which is historical rather than current information.

Is the wedding dress really worth $786,000?
The Philadelphia Museum of Art’s collection and exhibition records do not provide a $786,000 valuation. The official sources cited here do not establish that number as a sale price, insurance value or appraisal, so it should not be treated as a verified value for the dress.
What makes the gown distinctive?
The museum describes an ivory peau de soie bell-shaped skirt supported by petticoats, paired with a high-necked Brussels lace bodice. The lace was re-embroidered so its seams would be invisible and decorated with seed pearls. The ensemble also includes a prayer book, shoes, headpiece and circular silk-net veil.
The collection record adds that rose point lace motifs were detached from their original ground and pieced together to fit the bodice. The skirt is made of heavily pleated silk faille and has a smoothing petticoat, a ruffled petticoat and a foundation petticoat. A triangular tulle-and-lace train insert and a pleated silk-faille cummerbund complete the ensemble. The object record provides further construction details.

Rose’s design sketch reflects her preference for soft ivory, long sleeves and high necklines, with a focal design at the back. The sketch record says the veil used a single layer of unadorned tulle so Kelly’s face would remain visible. See the museum’s record for Helen Rose’s wedding-dress sketch.
