The latest located report quoting a Will County docket says Drew Peterson was in Illinois Department of Corrections custody at a status hearing on August 27, 2026. It lists November 3, 2026, as the next status date. The report does not establish his exact prison facility, and the outcome of that later hearing is not confirmed here.

Where is Drew Peterson now?

As of the August 27, 2026, status hearing, Peterson was reported to be in Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) custody. The report quoting the Will County docket is a forum post, rather than an official docket page, so it is a dated custody update—not independent confirmation of his location today. See the report quoting the docket.

The report lists November 3, 2026, as a further status date. Its outcome is not established here. The exact facility where Peterson was held was also not confirmed. IDOC cautions that a person may not appear in its public search for several reasons, including incarceration in another state or use of a different name; a missing search result alone would not prove release. Read IDOC’s public search guidance.

Why Peterson is in prison

Kathleen Savio murder conviction

Peterson was convicted by a jury of murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio, and sentenced to 38 years in prison. In its 2017 opinion, the Illinois Supreme Court described the appellate history and said, “The appellate court affirmed defendant’s conviction and sentence.” Read the Illinois Supreme Court opinion.

Separate murder-for-hire solicitation conviction

In a separate case, Peterson was convicted of solicitation of murder for hire and received a 40-year sentence. That sentence belongs to the separate solicitation conviction; it is not the sentence imposed for Savio’s murder. Read the Illinois Appellate Court order.

What later court challenges changed

A federal district court denied Peterson’s habeas petition in 2021. That ruling addressed his federal challenge to the state proceedings and describes the 38-year murder sentence; it is a historical procedural milestone, not a decision on later state post-conviction litigation. Read the federal court order.

In a 2024 appellate order, the Illinois Appellate Court rejected a procedural challenge involving an unnotarized declaration and affirmed dismissal of Peterson’s actual-innocence claim. The order did not vacate either conviction. Read the 2024 appellate order.

What remains unconfirmed

  • The exact correctional facility where Peterson was held.
  • Whether his custody status changed after the August 27, 2026, hearing.
  • The outcome of the November 3, 2026, status date listed in the report.

For a verified facility or later update, check the official IDOC individual-in-custody search and the Will County docket. IDOC’s search guidance explains why a person might not appear, so absence from the results should not be treated as proof of release.
