How did Charney leave American Apparel?
Charney founded American Apparel in 1989. In December 2014, the company’s board removed him from his leadership role and appointed Paula Schneider as CEO. The company cited alleged violations of its sexual-harassment and anti-discrimination policies and misuse of corporate assets. Charney denied the allegations and challenged his ouster. These are disputed claims; the reporting cited here does not establish that every allegation was proven in court.
American Apparel entered bankruptcy proceedings in 2015–2016. Charney pursued litigation and unsuccessfully sought to regain control, according to historical reporting. What happened after American Apparel?
Charney launched Los Angeles Apparel in 2016. In a contemporaneous LAist interview, he described it as a continuation of the former company’s spirit and said he planned to manufacture in South Central Los Angeles. That interview records his intention at the time; it is not an independent audit of current production.
In a 2017 Retail Dive interview, Charney said, “I believe in my workers, I believe in domestic manufacturing. I believe in fair wages. I believe in quality and craftsmanship.” He also said, “I can have a multi-billion dollar business if 1% of society appreciates what I do.” The latter was an expression of ambition, not a reported business result.

Charney’s later history has included serious workplace and financial developments. Biography.com reported that a COVID-19 outbreak among Los Angeles Apparel workers in 2020 led Los Angeles County public health officials to order a temporary shutdown. The same 2025 profile reported at least 375 employees contracted COVID-19 and four workers died. These are figures reported about the 2020 outbreak, not current company statistics.
Biography.com also reported that Charney filed for personal bankruptcy in March 2022, with assets and debts reportedly potentially reaching $50 million each, citing Bloomberg. That is a historical report about a filing, not evidence of his present net worth or financial circumstances.

Why is Dov Charney back in the conversation?
The 2025 documentary Trainwreck: The Cult of American Apparel renewed attention to American Apparel and Charney’s role in its history. TV Insider reported in July 2025 that the documentary was streaming on Netflix then. Streaming catalogs vary by region and change over time, so that report does not confirm current availability.
TV Insider also reported that Los Angeles Apparel planned a SoHo store opening in summer 2025; the sources available here do not confirm whether that store opened or remains open.
