The department warns that its location and status information can change quickly, so this is the address on its record—not independent, live confirmation of his physical placement.
Where is Bryan Kohberger being held?
The Idaho Department of Correction’s resident record lists Kohberger as in custody at an Idaho Maximum Security Institution J Block mailing address: PO Box 51, Boise, Idaho 83707. The sentence data displayed on the record were current as of 5:05 a.m. on October 4, 2026. IDOC cautions that its database may not reflect the latest location or status, so the listing should be read as the department’s recorded mailing address rather than a real-time confirmation of where he is physically housed. Check the IDOC resident record.
What is Kohberger’s current legal status?
Kohberger pleaded guilty, and Idaho State Police says the case was fully adjudicated on July 23, 2025. The state lists four fixed life sentences for murder, to be served consecutively without parole, and a fixed ten-year sentence for burglary. The Idaho Attorney General’s office says the fixed sentences mean he will not be eligible for parole. Idaho State Police case information and the Attorney General’s sentencing statement describe the disposition.
Has he withdrawn his guilty plea?
No withdrawal is reported in the latest cited court update. In July 2026, Kohberger filed a handwritten petition asking to withdraw his plea. He alleged that his lawyers inadequately represented him and that promises and threats affected his decision; those are claims in his petition, not court findings. The Associated Press reported on the petition on July 27, 2026.

On August 26, 2026, the Associated Press reported that Fourth District Judge Steven Hippler had not granted a hearing on the claims. The judge set a date in June in case he later decides an evidentiary hearing is warranted and directed the parties to follow evidentiary rules. The report does not say the plea was withdrawn. Accordingly, the guilty plea and sentence remain the operative disposition in the available reporting while the challenge remains a procedural development. Read the AP timeline update.
What happened in the Idaho College Murders?
Four University of Idaho students—Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin—were murdered in their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho, on November 13, 2022. Kohberger was arrested on December 30, 2022, and later pleaded guilty. Idaho State Police’s Moscow Murders case page provides the state’s case summary. The cited sentencing coverage reported no motive had been offered; there is no basis here to speculate about one. The Associated Press’s July 23, 2025 sentencing report also reported $270,000 in fines and civil penalties.
