The plane in Society of the Snow crashes at El Valle de las Lágrimas—the Valley of Tears—in the Andes on the Argentina–Chile border. The film’s story is based on the 1972 crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which was carrying a rugby team to Chile.

Where is the Valley of Tears?

Netflix identifies the real crash location as the Valley of Tears. A location page places the valley at 34°45′54″S, 70°17′11″W. Those coordinates identify the valley on that page; they should not be read as a separately surveyed position for the aircraft fuselage.

Netflix Tudum describes the crash valley as approximately 11,500 feet above sea level. A dedicated location page describes the glacier as nearly 4,000 metres high. Both are rounded descriptions of the area, not a precise surveyed elevation for the fuselage.

The location account says the aircraft struck a summit, lost its tail, and slid down the mountainside before the fuselage stopped on the glacier. The setting’s remoteness is captured by survivor Roberto Canessa’s description to Netflix Tudum: “We were like flies in the middle of nothing…”

Was the film shot at the actual crash site?

Partly. Netflix says the Andes exterior shots were filmed at the Valley of Tears in Argentina. The rest of the film was shot at Sierra Nevada Ski Station in Granada, Spain. Netflix’s 2023 announcement also says production filmed at several locations in the Andes in both Chile and Argentina, including El Valle de las Lágrimas. The film therefore uses footage from the real region, but it was not filmed entirely at the crash site.
