Canadians’ travel is shifting toward destinations at home and overseas, but the available data does not show that Disney World or Universal Studios cancellations drove the change—or that Canadians are all going to one place instead. Statistics Canada recorded fewer Canadian visits to the United States in 2025 than in 2024, while domestic and overseas visits rose above 2019 levels. In a 2026 Leger survey, most respondents who said they were less likely to visit the U.S. said they were more likely to travel within Canada.
Where are Canadians traveling instead of the United States?
The clearest answer is: many are considering trips within Canada, while overseas travel is also part of the picture. There is no single replacement destination in the available figures.
Statistics Canada counted 342.040 million visits within Canada in 2025, 23.096 million visits to the United States and 14.270 million visits to overseas countries. These are visits, not unique travellers. Domestic and overseas visits exceeded their 2019 levels, while visits to the U.S. remained considerably lower.
In Leger’s Spring 2026 survey, 75% of respondents who were less likely to travel to the U.S. said they were more likely to travel within Canada. The question allowed multiple answers: 58% named travel within their home province and 39% elsewhere in Canada, so those figures are not mutually exclusive shares.

Are Canadians canceling Disney World and Universal Studios trips?
National travel statistics do not provide cancellation totals for Disney World or Universal Studios, and the reviewed survey results do not identify theme-park bookings. Statistics Canada does report that Canadian visits to the U.S. for holidays, leisure and recreation fell 21.5% in 2025 compared with 2024. Visits to see friends and relatives fell 9.0% over the same period. Those figures describe broad travel purposes, not specific parks or individual cancellations.
Leger’s Spring 2026 report found that 70% of respondents said they were less likely to visit the U.S. than the previous year, while 9% said they were more likely. Among those less likely, respondents could select multiple reasons: 67% cited the political climate and Canada-U.S. tensions, 61% tariffs or trade tensions, 59% feeling unsafe, 48% not feeling welcome, 39% the exchange rate and 37% border delays or complications. These are reported reasons, not proof of what caused any particular person to change a trip.

What the travel surveys say—and what they do not
BDC reported in May 2026 that nearly nine in ten Canadians planned to travel that year. Among surveyed travellers, 92% planned at least one trip within Canada, 70% said they were avoiding travel to the U.S., and 81% of households expected to make compromises. These are intentions and expectations, not a record of completed trips.
BDC estimated that redirecting one overnight stay abroad to a day of Canadian travel could add up to $4.6 billion to GDP. That is an estimate, not a measured economic impact from completed travel.

Leger’s Spring 2026 report said 67% planned to travel within Canada and 14% planned to travel to the U.S. Its overall Canadian resident sample was 1,583; the subgroup of respondents less likely to visit the U.S. was 1,119. These findings describe survey responses, not a census of bookings.
Destination Canada described summer 2025 as a record for Canadian tourism and estimated total summer tourism revenue at $59 billion. It also reported $140.5 billion in direct visitor spending for 2025. These industry-level figures do not establish how much spending came from Canadians switching away from U.S. theme-park trips.

How to plan a Canadian alternative
A Canadian national park or regional trip may suit some families, but it is not a like-for-like replacement for a theme park vacation. Compare actual options for the same party and number of nights before deciding.
- Total trip cost: Include transportation, accommodation, meals, admission and local travel.
- Door-to-door time: Compare the full journey, not just flight time or the distance on a map.
- Season and weather: Check the conditions typical of your dates and whether your preferred activities operate then.
- Attraction mix and ages: Consider what each traveller wants to do and whether the destination suits younger children, teens or adults.
- Flexibility: Review cancellation terms and current availability before paying.
Parks Canada offers regional vacation planners for Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, the Canadian Prairies, Western Canada and Northern Canada, along with planning tools for destinations, directions and visits. Its annual Discovery Pass covers more than 80 destinations for 12 months; check the current terms before planning. Destination Canada also provides information about destinations, transportation and accommodation.
These resources can help with a domestic itinerary, but they do not determine whether a park-focused trip will match a particular family’s interests or budget.
