The four women at the center of Jawbreaker (1999) are Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart, Julie Benz and Judy Greer. Of them, only Rebecca Gayheart has a dated, attributable career development in the sources available for this update: a reported 2026 return to the film’s property as Principal Sherwood in a stage-musical workshop. For McGowan, Benz and Greer, the sources confirm their film roles but not their current work, so this article does not describe their present careers.

Rebecca Gayheart: Principal Sherwood in Jawbreaker The Musical
The most recent cast-related development is a production announcement. BroadwayWorld reported on July 23, 2026, that Gayheart would return to the property 27 years after the film, playing Principal Sherwood in Jawbreaker The Musical. The reported Los Angeles workshop was scheduled for September 4–20, 2026, at the Hudson Theatre.

Those dates have now passed. The July report is the only source found for the plan, and it does not confirm that the workshop ran as scheduled, that later performances were planned, or that tickets were on sale. It also does not describe Gayheart’s wider career.
Director Darren Stein explained the adaptation’s approach in the same announcement period:
“Jawbreaker has always had the heightened, timeless quality of a musical and getting to re-imagine Fern Mayo’s story in the current cultural climate allows for deeper emotion and higher stakes. The meaning these characters have had for people over the years, especially the queer community, has really informed how we’re making the story impactful for today.”

Rose McGowan (Courtney Shayne)
McGowan is the film’s lead in the Courtney Shayne role. A 2024 Vogue retrospective includes her comments on the film’s wardrobe, which is the most recent direct statement from her in the sources reviewed. The article does not state what she has worked on since then.
Julie Benz (Marcie Fox)
Benz plays Marcie Fox. The AFI and Sony listings confirm the role. The sources reviewed do not report a current career update for her.
Judy Greer (Fern Mayo / Vylette)
Greer plays both Fern Mayo and Vylette, the dual role that anchors the stage adaptation’s source material. A 2019 Queerty interview with Stein discusses the cast, but those comments are dated and are not a report on Greer’s present career.

Vogue’s 2024 retrospective reports that Stein and costume designer Vikki Barrett built the main trio’s look around colorful retro silhouettes, bright colors and vintage purses rather than backpacks. The costumes are a major reason the film remains a visual reference point, which is why the wardrobe comments are still quoted.
Barrett described the intended contrast between the clothes and the story:

“[The clothes] were supposed to look really happy,” Vikki Barrett, the film’s costumer designer, tells Vogue. “There was a surprise element to [them]—so that you wouldn’t know these girls were dark.”
McGowan credited the collaboration in the same piece:
“I remain endlessly proud of costumer Vikki and Darren’s brilliant collaboration,” she says. “Every detail in the film’s costuming was considered. What I love about Jawbreaker is that everyone came to win—and we did.”

Stein described the look he wanted for the characters:
“When I was younger, I’d look at high school girls and think, ‘They’re so glamorous.’ I wanted the Jawbreaker girls to feel like that,” says Stein.
