The short answer is that Kristine and Michael Barnett are no longer together, and their exact current locations are not reliably documented. The couple divorced in 2014, after the events that made Natalia Grace’s story a true-crime documentary subject. Kristine has continued to present herself publicly as an author and disability advocate, while Michael has made occasional documentary appearances but has otherwise kept a lower profile.
The legal outcome is also less dramatic—and more complicated—than some summaries suggest: Michael was acquitted in 2022, Kristine’s charges were dismissed in 2023, and neither went to prison over the case.

Where are Kristine and Michael Barnett now?
There is no well-supported public record identifying a current city, address, employer, or household for either Barnett. That makes claims about where they live now difficult to verify and not appropriate to present as fact.
What can be established is their public status. Kristine has been described in public biographies as an author, writer, activist, and advocate for children with disabilities. In March 2024, she announced a planned book called Witch Hunt: The Kristine Barnett Story. Reporting available for this article does not establish that the book was later published.

Michael has remained less visible. He appeared in the 2023 documentary The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: Natalia Speaks, where he met Natalia in person and gave his account of the family’s history. That appearance confirms only that he participated in the production; it does not establish where he lives or what work he currently does.
| Person | What is publicly documented | What is not reliably documented |
|---|---|---|
| Kristine Barnett | Author and disability advocate; announced a planned memoir in 2024 | Current residence, employer, and whether the planned book was published |
| Michael Barnett | Appeared in a 2023 Natalia Grace documentary; acquitted in 2022 | Current residence, occupation, and household |
Are Kristine and Michael Barnett still married?
No. The Indiana Court of Appeals record states that Kristine and Michael divorced in 2014. Their divorce came after they had adopted Natalia in 2010 and after Natalia had been placed in a separate apartment in Indiana while the Barnetts moved to Canada with their biological sons.
The divorce date matters because online summaries sometimes describe the Barnetts as if they remained a single household throughout the entire case. They did not. Their later legal positions and public appearances should not be read as evidence that they are still a couple.
What happened to Natalia Grace?
The Barnetts adopted Natalia in 2010. Her adoption decree listed her birth year as 2003. In June 2012, they asked an Indiana probate court to change that year to 1989. The court granted the request 11 days later.

The appellate record noted important procedural details: Natalia was not appointed a guardian ad litem, and the court did not hold an evidentiary hearing before issuing the age-change order. The order changed her legal records and status. It was not the same thing as a definitive scientific determination of her biological age.
In 2013, the Barnetts moved Natalia into an apartment in Indiana and relocated to Canada. Reports differ over some of the practical details, including apartment and payment arrangements, but the central event is not in dispute: Natalia was living separately while the Barnetts left the country with their biological children.
The Barnetts said Natalia was an adult pretending to be a child and made allegations about threatening behavior. Natalia has denied those claims. Because the accounts conflict, they should be treated as allegations and competing versions of events—not as established facts.
Did Kristine or Michael Barnett go to jail?
No. Neither Barnett was convicted or sent to prison in the Natalia Grace case.

- 2019: Indiana charged both Barnetts with neglect-related offenses.
- 2022: Michael Barnett was acquitted at trial.
- 2023: Kristine Barnett’s charges were dismissed, according to contemporaneous reporting.
The legal outcome was shaped by several issues, including the 2012 age-change order, statute-of-limitations questions, evidentiary rulings, and restrictions on how Natalia’s age could be treated in the criminal proceedings.
| Case | Outcome | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Michael Barnett | Acquitted in 2022 | A jury found him not guilty; he was not convicted or imprisoned |
| Kristine Barnett | Charges dismissed in 2023 | The case ended without a conviction |
Why the age-change order is often misunderstood
One of the most repeated claims about the case is that a court “proved” Natalia was an adult. That is misleading.
The court issued an order changing the year on her legal records from 2003 to 1989. That legal order affected how Natalia was classified during the relevant period, but it was not a conclusive medical or scientific finding of her true age. The Indiana appellate record specifically discussed the absence of a guardian ad litem and an evidentiary hearing when the order was made.
This distinction became significant in the criminal case. The altered legal status affected the neglect allegations and how prosecutors could frame the events. It did not resolve every factual dispute between Natalia and the Barnetts.

What the documentaries leave unresolved
The documentary series and specials have brought renewed attention to the Barnetts, Natalia, and the competing accounts of what happened inside the family. They have also encouraged simplified conclusions that the court record does not support.
The available record supports these conclusions:
- The Barnetts adopted Natalia in 2010, when her adoption documents listed 2003 as her birth year.
- An Indiana court changed her legal birth year to 1989 in 2012.
- Natalia lived in an Indiana apartment while the Barnetts moved to Canada in 2013.
- Kristine and Michael divorced in 2014.
- Michael was acquitted and Kristine was not convicted after her charges were dismissed.
It does not support publishing an exact current location for either former spouse, treating the Barnetts’ allegations as proven, or saying that a court scientifically established Natalia’s age.

Kristine and Michael Barnett are divorced and have largely moved outside the day-to-day public spotlight. Kristine remains associated with writing and disability advocacy, and Michael has appeared in documentary coverage of the case. Their precise present circumstances are not reliably reported.
Natalia’s story continues to be revisited in documentaries, but the legal record is narrower than many dramatic retellings suggest. The Barnetts did not go to prison: Michael was acquitted, and Kristine’s case ended without a conviction.
