Eid al-Adha 2025 fell on Friday, June 6, in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates; Islamic Relief UK’s 2025 calendar also listed June 6. The festival is observed on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar. In Saudi Arabia, Arafah was Thursday, June 5, immediately before Eid. Because the date depends on the lunar month and the authority or method a community follows, June 6 should not be treated as a universal date for every Muslim community.
When was Eid al-Adha in 2025?
Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court accepted reports that the Dhul-Hijjah crescent had been sighted on the evening of May 27, 2025. Its calendar placed 1 Dhul-Hijjah on May 28, Arafah on June 5 and Eid al-Adha on Friday, June 6. The UAE Council for Fatwa also confirmed June 6 as the first day of Eid. The Saudi Supreme Court announcement and the UAE confirmation establish those dates for those jurisdictions.
Islamic Relief UK’s 2025 calendar likewise listed 1 Dhul-Hijjah as May 28, Arafah as June 5 and Eid as June 6, while noting the role of moon sighting. These announcements and calendar listing do not provide a complete record of observance in every country or community.
Why can Eid dates differ by place?
Eid al-Adha is the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah, a lunar month. Its Gregorian date changes from year to year, and communities may rely on different local religious authorities or approaches to determining the start of the month. A calendar published before the month begins can be a forecast; an announcement following a crescent sighting reflects a later determination.

For a specific location, check the religious authority or community calendar you follow. The UK Hydrographic Office’s crescent-visibility publication for Dhu al-Hijja 2025 provides visibility information, while local observance dates depend on the relevant calendar decision.
What does Eid al-Adha mean?
Eid al-Adha is commonly translated as the Festival of Sacrifice. Its observance recalls the devotion of Ibrahim (Abraham) and is associated with Qurbani, also called udhiyyah: the sacrificial offering connected with the festival. Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta describes udhiyyah as worship during Eid al-Adha and the three days that follow, and connects the practice to Ibrahim’s sacrifice and the provision of meat.

The practice also emphasizes sharing. Jordan’s Iftaa’ Department discusses preserving and distributing sacrificial meat to people in need. The exact religious rulings and requirements can differ; these sources do not establish one rule that applies identically to every Muslim.

Both fall in Dhul-Hijjah. Arafah precedes Eid in the calendar, and Hajj—the annual pilgrimage to Mecca and one of Islam’s Five Pillars—takes place during the month. The Associated Press explanation of Hajj and Eid al-Adha describes this connection. Eid is not limited to pilgrims: Muslims celebrate it around the world, whether or not they are performing Hajj that year.
