Use a single prerecorded event when one recording is enough; choose a live or mixed-content workflow when a host or guest needs to appear between recorded segments. The right choice depends on the shape of the program, the destination’s scheduling behavior, and whether you need a one-off event or continuous programming.
Choose a playlist when the program has multiple segments
A playlist turns several prerecorded videos into one scheduled broadcast. It is useful when the order matters: for example, a documentary screening followed by a discussion prompt, a sequence of short films, a workshop series, a product demonstration, or a planned music block. Restream lists product launches, demos, workshops, live sales, online music and television, charity and fundraising, and interactive performances among possible playlist uses. Those are examples of formats, not evidence that playlists themselves increase viewing or engagement.
If a single recording is the entire program, schedule it as one prerecorded-video event instead. A playlist adds value when it provides sequencing, not simply because the content was recorded in advance. Restream documents separate event flows for a video and a playlist: schedule a single prerecorded video and create and stream a playlist.
Match the workflow to the program

Check the destination before relying on automatic start
Restream says scheduled video files and playlists go live automatically at the selected time. Its scheduling documentation also notes that some connected destinations, including TikTok and Instagram, require a manual start on the platform. Treat automatic start as destination-specific: confirm the current requirements for each channel you connect rather than assuming one service setting will launch every destination unattended. Advance event links are also not universal. Restream says scheduled playlists can have advance links on Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn; where an advance event link is unavailable, it advises sharing the channel or profile URL instead. StreamYard’s documentation likewise says advance scheduling is not available for some destinations, including X, Instagram, and custom RTMP destinations. Check where an event page can be created before announcing a link to viewers.
Understand the playlist limits before building the schedule
Restream’s playlist article, published July 25, 2026, specifies a maximum duration of 24 hours and a maximum of 40 video entries; duplicated clips count toward the entry limit. It says video membership and order can be changed only before the playlist goes live. Once it is airing, graphics and chat can still be edited. These are Restream-specific product limits, not general limits on prerecorded streaming.

Restream also says back-to-back playlists run as separate streams with a two-minute buffer. If your schedule depends on a seamless handoff, account for that gap. Its separate prerecorded-video workflow offers looping up to 10 times on its Marathon and Media add-on tiers; plan availability and limits can change, so confirm the current terms before relying on a loop. A playlist’s maximum duration, upload and storage allowances, supported resolution, editing options, and ability to reuse or duplicate a schedule all vary by service.
Compare services against the actual workflow
- Destination behavior: Can the service schedule prerecorded events to every channel you need, and does each one start automatically?
- Promotion: Can you share an event page or advance link before the broadcast, or must you direct viewers to a profile?
- Playlist capacity: What are the limits for total duration, number of clips, upload size, storage, and resolution?
- Program editing: Can you reorder, replace, or reuse videos after scheduling, and when do edits stop being allowed?
- Mixed production: Can the workflow combine a live host or guest with prerecorded segments?
- Continuity: Is looping or continuous operation explicitly supported on the plan you intend to use?
