Start with the age rating for the exact Call of Duty game your son wants, not the franchise name. There is no single rating for the series. The ESRB’s general Call of Duty entry is Teen, while Activision’s US and UK catalogs list Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 at Mature 17+ and PEGI 18+ respectively. If your son is below the local rating for that specific title, wait. If he meets it, the decision depends on whether he is ready for the content, the online features, and the spending and time limits you set.
Why the franchise name doesn’t tell you the age
Call of Duty is a series of separately rated games released over many years, and the ratings differ by country and by installment. The table below shows the examples that official sources give. It is not a complete list of the series.
| Rating source | What it covers | Rating given in the source | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), North America | The general Call of Duty franchise entry | Teen, with content descriptors Blood and Violence | A franchise-level entry. Individual installments can be rated differently. |
| Activision US product catalog | Individual titles | Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and several other installments listed as Mature 17+ | Other installments are not named in the catalog excerpt, so check each one separately. |
| Activision UK product catalog | Individual titles | Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and several titles listed as PEGI 18+ | PEGI is the UK and European system. Other titles are not named in the excerpt. |
| eSafety Commissioner, Australia | Call of Duty games in general | Some games MA15+, others R18+ | The eSafety guide was last updated June 5, 2024. |
The ESRB describes its purpose in plain terms: “ESRB ratings provide information about what’s in a video game or app so parents can make informed choices about which are right for their family.” The rating is therefore a content guide. It does not measure whether a particular child is ready for that content.
A decision sequence you can follow
- Identify the exact title and the platform it will be played on. A rating for one installment does not transfer to another.
- Find the age category for that title in your country, on the package or in the storefront listing. Where a local law sets a minimum age for the category, follow the law.
- Read the content descriptors for that version so you know what the game depicts, such as violence or strong language.
- Judge your son’s readiness against that content, using the checklist below.
- Decide how online play will work: whether voice chat is allowed, whether purchases are possible, and how much time he may spend playing.
- Set the device controls, agree the household rules with him, and review the decision when the game, its online features, or his behavior changes.
Readiness: questions to answer about your son
No official source sets a universal developmental age for playing these games. The points below are questions a parent can use to judge readiness for a specific title. They are not established thresholds.

- Can he watch or play scenes of violence and stop when he feels uncomfortable?
- Can he lose a competitive match without the frustration spilling into the rest of his day?
- Does he understand not to share personal details, such as his name, school, or location, with people he meets online?
- Will he tell you if another player says something upsetting or threatening?
- Can he keep to a play schedule you have agreed together?
If the answer to several of these is no, a rating that he meets may still be too early for him, and you can delay the purchase or restrict online play until the answers improve.
Online play: voice chat and other players
The eSafety Commissioner’s guide describes Call of Duty’s team play, which includes voice chat. Online play means your son will hear adults and strangers as well as friends, and the game’s content and the other players’ behavior may not match the rating on the box.

Deciding on voice chat
Voice chat is the most direct route for a stranger to speak to your son, so it is the first setting to decide. Many parents allow voice chat only with people on his friends list. Others turn it off entirely until he has shown he can handle an upsetting exchange. Before he plays, explain what to do if someone is abusive: stop, mute or block the player, and tell you. Use the mute, block, and report options where the game and platform provide them.
In-game purchases
The eSafety guide notes that Call of Duty includes in-game purchases. Decide in advance whether he may spend money, how much, and on which account. The controls that limit spending are covered in the next section.

Device controls and time limits
The ESRB says device controls can help manage ratings, time limits, internet access, and in-game spending. These controls differ between consoles, PCs, and mobile devices, so check the options on the exact device your son will use before he starts playing. Set the limits before he begins online play, not after a problem appears.
Publisher account terms are a separate check
A game’s rating and the publisher’s account terms are two different requirements. Activision’s Terms of Use, dated September 5, 2025, state that its products are subject to applicable product ratings and restrictions. The terms set an age-13 baseline, but that baseline is itself subject to those ratings and restrictions. They also recommend that a parent be familiar with the device controls and accompany children under 13, or the applicable local minimum age, when they play online. Read the current terms for the title and your region before you buy or create an account for him.

Regional limits and what to verify
Ratings, catalogs, and account terms change, and the dates on the sources above are not the same. Check the rating on the package or the storefront for your country on the day you buy, rather than relying on an older list. The examples in this article are drawn from the ESRB, Activision’s catalogs, and the eSafety Commissioner’s guidance, and they do not cover every installment or country.
The rating is the starting point for the decision. Whether the game is right for your son depends on his readiness, the online features you allow, and the limits you set and keep to together.
