The seven main Harry Potter books are generally set from 1991 to 1998, following Harry through his Hogwarts years. The epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows jumps to 1 September 2017. The school-year dates are a commonly accepted reconstruction from clues in the novels, not a complete official timeline.
What years do the seven main books cover?
The standard timeline places Harry’s first Hogwarts year in September 1991 and the main story’s end around June 1998. Harry is eleven when he learns he is a wizard and receives his place at Hogwarts, as the official first-book summary explains. The seven novels then follow him through the school years and the events surrounding Voldemort’s return and defeat.

This date range refers to the books’ main events, not the entire history of the Wizarding World. Nor should it be confused with the books’ publication dates: the fictional story is set mostly in the 1990s, while the novels were published over a later period. J.K. Rowling’s official site lists the books and their editions on The Harry Potter Stories.
How is the 1991–1998 timeline worked out?
The novels do not provide one comprehensive calendar that explicitly labels every school year. Instead, readers and timeline analysts assemble dates from clues. One widely used anchor is Nearly Headless Nick’s 500th Deathday party in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: the cake gives his death date as 31 October 1492, placing the party in 1992. Steve VanderArk’s Harry Potter Lexicon timeline analysis uses that clue to support the usual sequence of school years.
#1 Best Overall
The sequence is useful, but not every date fits neatly. The Lexicon discusses tensions between some references and age-based clues, and notes that certain dates are left unstated. So 1991–1998 is best described as the standard reconstruction rather than a year-by-year chronology explicitly confirmed in every book.
When does the epilogue take place?
The Deathly Hallows epilogue is dated 1 September 2017. In it, Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione see their children off to Hogwarts. Wizarding World describes the scene as occurring a little over nineteen years after the Battle of Hogwarts in its article “Catching up with Harry Potter, Nineteen Years Later”.

Are the films set in the same years?
This timeline answers the question for the seven main books. Film adaptations and later franchise stories are separate continuities, and the book dates alone do not establish a definitive year for every film. The safest concise answer is therefore: the main books are generally set from 1991 to 1998, with the epilogue in 2017.
