Little Nightmares III takes place in the Nowhere, specifically in a region called the Spiral. Its exact position in the series timeline has not been confirmed. Bandai Namco has said it will leave the relationship between the characters and the different games for players to theorize about after release, so neither “before” nor “after” Little Nightmares and Little Nightmares II is an official answer.
Where the game is set
The publisher describes the Nowhere as the nightmare world that the Little Nightmares games share, and it describes the Spiral as a new region within that world. The game follows two new protagonists, Low and Alone, through the Spiral. That setting is the most concrete answer the publisher has given to the “where” part of the question.

- Shared world: the Nowhere is the setting of the series, so the third game belongs to the same universe as the first two.
- New region: the Spiral is presented as a new area within the Nowhere, not as a return to the locations of the earlier games.
- New cast: Low and Alone are the new protagonists. Low carries a bow and Alone carries a wrench.
- First chapter location: the Necropolis is a city raised from desert sand and powered by gusting winds. PlayStation’s official preview describes its ruins and calls it a city of “eternal energy and certain death.” The Necropolis is the first chapter’s location. It tells you where the opening of the game happens, not when the story falls in the series chronology.
What Bandai Namco has said about the timeline
The clearest official statement comes from the game’s producer, speaking for Bandai Namco in an official producer interview. Asked how the characters and the separate games relate in the timeline, the producer answered:
“As for the relationship between the characters and the different games in the timeline, we will let you make theories about that once the game has released.”

- Guide Low & Alone as they search for a path that could lead them out of the Nowhere
- Face your childhood fears together with a friend using online co-op, or solo with an AI companion
- Face your childhood fears together
- Navigate through a brand-new world of delusions
That answer is deliberate. It does not say the game comes before or after the earlier titles, and it does not say the question is simply unanswered at this stage. It hands the question to players after release. Silence in the interview should not be read as a hidden answer, because the producer addressed the question directly and chose not to resolve it.
The producer also described Little Nightmares III as a brand-new adventure and said players do not need to have played earlier entries to enjoy it. Returning players may spot connections and secrets, but the producer did not present those as a confirmed chronological order. The interview contains no named speaker in the accessible text, so the only attribution that can be made safely is “Little Nightmares III producer.”

Prequel, sequel, or concurrent story: what is established
Readers often arrive with one of three questions: is the game a prequel, a sequel, or set alongside the earlier games? The table below separates what the publisher has stated from what remains open.
| Question | Status | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Is it set in the Nowhere? | Stated by the publisher | Official description of the game’s setting |
| Is it set in the Spiral, a new region? | Stated by the publisher | Official description of the game’s setting |
| Does it require playing earlier games? | Stated by the producer: no | Official producer interview |
| Is it a prequel to Little Nightmares II? | Not confirmed | Producer said the timeline relationship is left open |
| Is it a sequel to Little Nightmares II? | Not confirmed | Producer said the timeline relationship is left open |
| Is it set at the same time as the earlier games? | Not confirmed | Producer said the timeline relationship is left open |
| Does it have a real-world release year that places it in the story? | Not confirmed | No official chronological placement has been published |
Shared universe, familiar motifs, and possible nods to earlier games are not enough by themselves to establish a chronological position. They show that the games belong together, which the publisher already states, but they do not show order.

How to judge fan timeline theories
Once the game is out, many players will build chronologies from clues. Before accepting one, check it against the following points.
- Identify the evidence type. Separate explicit statements from inferred ones. A line of dialogue that names a place is explicit. A matching shape, color, or object is inferred.
- Check whether the publisher has confirmed it. As of the official producer interview, no chronological order has been confirmed, so any order is speculation.
- Look for a single explanation of the clue. A motif that appears in several games can reflect design continuity rather than sequence.
- Label it. Present a theory as a theory, and say which evidence supports it.
Where to look next
Bandai Namco has also announced a Little Nightmares novel, The Lonely Ones, and a comic, Descent to Nowhere. They are reasonable places to look for more of the franchise’s world. They do not settle the order of the games, and readers should not treat them as proof of the third game’s place in the timeline.

Practical answer for readers
If you need a sentence you can rely on: Little Nightmares III is set in the Spiral, a new region of the Nowhere, and the publisher has not placed it before or after the earlier games. You can enjoy it without playing the earlier titles, and any link you find to them should be treated as a clue, not as settled chronology.
