Which episode reveals Kakashi’s face?
Look for Naruto: Shippuden episode 469, titled “A Special Mission.” The official Naruto website lists the same installment as overall Episode 689, so episode guides may show either number. Its official teaser reads, “Finally, the truth will be revealed… Do not miss the unveiling of the legend.”

The reveal comes at the episode’s end. Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura set out to photograph Kakashi without his mask, but their investigation is being steered by Sukea, the photographer helping them. Sukea is Kakashi in disguise, staying ahead of his own students as they pursue the answer.
Why is Kakashi’s face reveal a side story?
“A Special Mission” plays the long-running curiosity about Kakashi’s mask for comedy. The audience gets to see his face; Team 7 does not catch on to their teacher’s disguise. The episode is a character gag and payoff, rather than a turning point in the main conflict.

Contemporaneous 2016 coverage describes the episode’s events as anime-only and outside the manga’s main storyline. That supports calling it a side story, but not assigning a definitive canon label beyond that distinction. The same coverage mentions Masashi Kishimoto’s reported interest in showing Kakashi’s face and an exhibition drawing; it does not establish precisely how that drawing, a bonus chapter, and the episode relate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the episode add to Team 7’s story?
Kakashi is Team 7’s teacher, and the team’s bond is built through missions and tests as well as major battles. An official anniversary retrospective revisits the team’s reunion with Kakashi after Naruto’s training journey and another bell test, alongside the Kazekage Rescue and Long-Awaited Reunion arcs. Against that broader series backdrop, “A Special Mission” is a playful detour centered on the students’ curiosity about their teacher.
