Severance is set in a present-adjacent world that its creators deliberately decline to pin to a year. Showrunner Dan Erickson described the series as taking place “around now,” in an “alternate, vaguely now-ish timeline,” not in a future where the procedure at its center is already old news. No exact calendar year is confirmed in the creator’s statements, and the show never names a real town or state.
What the creator said about the timeline
In a February 2022 interview with TheWrap, Erickson was asked about the setting. He said the creators “intentionally kept a lot of ambiguity to the time and place.” Asked when the story takes place, he answered: “It is around now, it’s like vaguely now-ish.” He then ruled out a specific future reading: “We’re not going for something where this is 10 years in the future where severance has been invented and already exists. It’s sort of an alternate, vaguely now-ish timeline.”

Those are the most direct statements of intent available on the question. They place the story near the present, but they do not assign it a year, and they explicitly reject treating the series as a far-future or already-established-technology world.
Why no year is given
Erickson’s account of the setting is about deliberate vagueness rather than a missing detail. The show was filmed mostly in New York and New Jersey, and he said the city has a loose New England, East Coast feel. The creators did not want to tie the company or the city to a specific locale, so the building, the town and the calendar all stay unspecified.
#1 Best Overall
For a reader, the practical consequence is that the show’s world can feel recognizable while its dates stay out of reach. Anyone who tries to convert the series into a precise real-world year is adding a claim the creator has not made.
The 04/24/2020 license clue
Forbes has pointed to a Season 1 prop: the driver’s license belonging to Mark, which appears to show the date 04/24/2020. Viewers have read that as the date the license was issued. It is a fair reading of an on-screen detail, and it fits the “now-ish” feel. It is still a clue visible on a prop, not a statement from the creators about when the story happens, and it should not be treated as proof that the whole series takes place in 2020.
Rank #2
When the prop and the creator’s words seem to conflict, the creator’s account is the stronger evidence of intent. The prop is best read as one consistent detail inside a world that was built to stay undated.
Why the world still feels out of time
Apple’s official synopsis describes Lumon employees who undergo a procedure that surgically divides their memories between work and personal life. The Television Academy describes the series as a blend of dystopian science fiction, workplace drama and black comedy. It explains the central split in plain terms: “innies” have no memories of life outside work, and “outies” do not know what happens at the office.

- Drama, Blu-Ray
That premise is anchored in ordinary working life, such as commutes, offices and family obligations. Around that familiar base, the show adds uncanny and deliberately unexplained details. The result is a world that resembles the present without matching a calendar, which is consistent with the creator’s description.
How to answer the question accurately
- Say: Severance takes place around the present, in an alternate timeline with no stated year.
- Attribute: The creator’s description comes from Dan Erickson in a February 2022 TheWrap interview.
- Avoid: Claiming a specific year, including 2020, or describing the show as set in a distant future where the procedure already exists.
- Label prop evidence: Describe the license date as a viewer reading of a prop, not as the official timeline.
- Name the platform carefully: The streaming service was branded Apple TV+ when the interview took place, and Apple’s official listing for the series now uses the name Apple TV.
Limits of the available evidence
The clearest creator statement on timing dates from 2022, before the series’ later seasons. The sources reviewed do not include a later creator statement that gives a specific year or narrows the setting further. If a future interview were to name a year, that would be a more specific claim than anything currently on record, but it would not change the answer that the show is intentionally undated.
Rank #4
The question has no competing canonical answers to weigh. The real distinction is between what the creator has said directly and what viewers infer from individual props.
