A Christmas Story Christmas takes place in 1973, during the Christmas season. The film opens with adult Ralphie in Chicago, then follows him back to his childhood home in Hohman, Indiana, a fictional town.
The setting year: 1973
Star and producer Peter Billingsley is the source for the specific year. In his interview coverage from Fox News, published November 15, 2022, he placed the sequel in 1973. UPI’s November 17, 2022 report gives the same year, though its page could not be independently checked, so the Billingsley interview is the stronger reference.

Where the story begins and ends up
The movie starts in Chicago, where adult Ralphie receives a call to go home. He travels to Hohman, the Indiana hometown from the original film, to host a Christmas for his own children like the one he remembers from childhood. Hohman is fictional, so it should not be treated as a real Indiana municipality.
The 1970s and the original film’s timeline
Billingsley’s broader description is that the sequel is set in the 1970s. In a Parade interview published November 11, 2022, he said the movie takes place in Chicago in the ’70s and that Ralphie returns to Hohman, where he grew up. He also noted that the original film was never explicitly placed in the early 1940s, though it often feels timeless. Fox News reported that he placed the original around 1940, which makes the sequel’s 1973 date a few decades later.

The two descriptions are compatible. “The 1970s” is the decade; 1973 is the specific year Billingsley gave in his interviews.

The sequel was released in 2022, but that is the production and release year, not the story’s year. The fictional timeline is 1973.
