U.S. BritBox subscribers saw Vera‘s final season begin on January 2, 2025. Series 14 contained two feature-length episodes, with the final episode arriving January 9. ITV had confirmed that this was the definitive end of Brenda Blethyn’s run as DCI Vera Stanhope.
U.S. BritBox subscribers did not have to wait long for Vera Series 14. The final season premiered on Thursday, January 2, 2025, and consisted of just two feature-length episodes. The concluding episode arrived one week later, on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
Those dates apply to the U.S. BritBox rollout. In the United Kingdom, the two episodes aired on ITV1 and STV on January 1 and January 2, 2025. That difference matters because some listings and older reports use the U.K. broadcast dates rather than the dates American BritBox viewers saw.

BritBox’s January announcement confirmed that the season would be released weekly rather than all at once. It was therefore not a standard six- or four-episode run: Series 14 contained only two approximately 120-minute films. BritBox’s U.S. January 2025 programming announcement listed both the January 2 premiere and the January 9 conclusion.

Why Series 14 was the final season
This was a definitive ending for the ITV crime drama, not a temporary pause or a routine gap between seasons. ITV announced in April 2024 that Brenda Blethyn would return as Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope for one final series before leaving the role.
ITV’s announcement described Series 14 as the show’s last series and noted that the production had commissioned 54 episodes before ordering the final two feature-length installments. Blethyn, who had played the Northumberland detective since the program began, was also stepping away from Vera’s familiar hat and trench coat. The broadcaster’s official production announcement confirms both the final-series status and Blethyn’s departure.
As a result, viewers should not interpret the short run as evidence that additional episodes were held back. The two films were planned as the conclusion to the television adaptation’s 14-season, 14-year journey.
What happens in the two final episodes?
The first film begins when a young man’s body is found on the banks of the River Tyne. Vera’s investigation leads into damaged relationships, secret love, old grudges, fraud and the possibility that revenge may have motivated the killing. The feature-length format gives the case room to develop beyond the pace of a conventional one-hour mystery.

The second and final film takes Vera to the Dark Wives stones after a student is found dead. The location has a personal connection: it recalls Vera’s childhood memories. That link between the present investigation and Vera’s past gives the finale an unusually reflective tone. BritBox described the closing story as an emotional farewell that blends past and present.
BritBox’s current U.S. listing identifies Vera as a 14-season series spanning 2011–2025. Its description of Series 14 points to two intense cases, career-defining decisions and a missing child alongside the final investigations. The listing is available on the official BritBox Vera page, although catalogs and access can vary by country, subscription route and licensing arrangements.
Do not confuse the finale with Vera: Farewell Pet
BritBox also promoted Vera: Farewell Pet, a behind-the-scenes documentary featuring cast reflections and access to the making of the drama’s final chapter. It is separate from Series 14: the documentary is not a third episode, and it does not change the two-episode release schedule.
The title refers to Vera’s distinctive nickname, “Pet,” and the documentary is intended as a companion piece for viewers who want production memories and interviews after finishing the drama. BritBox lists it separately from the scripted series; its availability may differ by territory. The Canadian listing can be found under Vera: Farewell Pet.

How to watch Vera now
For viewers in the United States, the relevant destination is the official BritBox U.S. service. Its plans and promotional offers can change, so readers should check the current monthly or annual options, trial eligibility and catalog before subscribing. A U.S. subscription should not be assumed to provide the same lineup as BritBox in Canada, the U.K. or another market.
Because both final episodes were scheduled for January 2025, a viewer starting the series now should be able to look for the complete final season rather than wait for a future premiere—provided Series 14 remains licensed in that viewer’s territory. Search for Series 14 within the Vera program page, and check that the listing identifies it as the final season. The companion documentary may appear as a separate title rather than inside the season menu.

Vera began as a television adaptation of crime writer Ann Cleeves’s Vera Stanhope novels. The books are a useful next step for viewers who want more of the character, but they are not a continuation of the television finale and should not be expected to reproduce every plot or relationship from the ITV adaptation. ITV identifies Cleeves as the creator of Vera, whose television version was played by Blethyn.
Readers interested in the source material can explore the Ann Cleeves Vera Stanhope novels, checking the edition, format and seller before buying. The novels offer additional cases in literary form; they do not mean that a fifteenth television season has been commissioned.
