That is the date the studio’s official listing gives as the film’s release date. Readers who find April 1, 1965 in older histories are looking at a different milestone: the roadshow theatrical opening at select theaters.
The three 1965 dates and what each one marks
The film has three dates from its first year, and each refers to a different event. A short answer should name the one it means.

Why the April 1 date appears in some accounts
The film was presented as a roadshow release, a format in which a film played in limited, reserved-seat engagements at selected theaters before wider distribution. AFI’s 2022 Catalog Spotlight describes the April 1 opening in this format, with 70mm presentation and stereophonic sound. Accounts that cite April 1 are therefore usually describing when the roadshow version reached audiences, not when the film first premiered or when the studio dated its release.
Which date to use
- For “when did it come out?” Use March 2, 1965. It is the New York world premiere and the date the studio lists as the release date.
- For the first public screening in Los Angeles-area press coverage Use March 10, 1965, the Beverly Hills premiere.
- For the roadshow run or 70mm exhibition history Use April 1, 1965, the roadshow opening at select theaters.
Sources behind these dates
The AFI Catalog entry for The Sound of Music records all three dates with their venues and is the most detailed production-history source. The 20th Century Studios official film page lists March 2, 1965 as the release date. AFI’s Catalog Spotlight, published March 28, 2022, covers the April 1 roadshow opening and the presentation format.
