The “this summer” theater event in this headline was a June 2024 rerelease, not an upcoming attraction. Fathom Events and Warner Bros. screened remastered extended editions of Peter Jackson’s trilogy on June 8, 9 and 10, 2024. A separate 25th-anniversary run followed in January 2026; as of October 8, 2026, Fathom lists no upcoming trilogy releases.

What were the 2024 theater dates?

Fathom and Warner Bros. announced a nationwide theatrical return, with one film screened per day in story order. The listed start times were local to each theater:

Date Film Listed start time
June 8, 2024 The Fellowship of the Ring 4:00 p.m. local time
June 9, 2024 The Two Towers 4:00 p.m. local time
June 10, 2024 The Return of the King 7:00 p.m. local time

These were the remastered extended editions. At the time of the announcement, tickets were offered through Fathom and participating theater box offices; that historical availability does not mean tickets are on sale now. Fathom’s 2024 announcement has the event details.

Was there another rerelease?

Yes. Fathom announced a distinct 25th-anniversary event in December 2025, with the extended editions returning on two weekends in January 2026. DBOX presentations were available at select theaters during the first weekend, subject to local availability.

Date Film Presentation detail
January 16 and 23, 2026 The Fellowship of the Ring DBOX offered where available on January 16
January 17 and 24, 2026 The Two Towers DBOX offered where available on January 17
January 18 and 25, 2026 The Return of the King DBOX offered where available on January 18

The locations and showtimes varied by theater. Fathom’s anniversary announcement also described limited event collectibles, which should be treated as historical rather than currently available.

Are the films still playing in theaters?

No upcoming trilogy release is listed by Fathom as of October 8, 2026. Its current release page for The Return of the King marks the event as past and says there are no upcoming trilogy releases. The page for The Fellowship of the Ring lists a runtime of 3 hours 28 minutes; Fathom’s Return of the King page lists 4 hours 13 minutes. Those page runtimes are useful context for the 2026 presentations, but they do not establish the runtime of every theater’s 2024 screening.

What to know about the trilogy

The screenings featured Peter Jackson’s film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novels. Fathom’s 2025 announcement described the six-film Middle-earth series—not just this trilogy—as having earned $6 billion at the global box office and 17 Academy Awards. The trilogy’s source novels are a natural companion for viewers interested in Tolkien’s original story.
