Sam Mac was due back on Sunrise on Monday, 4 December 2023, after about a month of paternity leave. He announced the planned return on air on 30 November 2023; this was a 2023 update, not a future return announcement.
When was Sam Mac due back on Sunrise?
In a 7NEWS report published on 30 November 2023, the Sunrise weather presenter said he would return to work the following Monday, 4 December. 7NEWS transcribed his on-air announcement: “I know there’s been a huge build-up for this and I’m very excited to announce…I’m back at work on Monday.” The quotation reflects the outlet’s published transcription, not an independently verified transcript. 7NEWS’s return announcement
Why had he taken leave?
Mac had taken about a month off to care for his daughter, Margot, while his partner, stylist Rebecca James, returned to work. The earlier 7NEWS coverage of his leave reported that he thanked Seven and the Sunrise team for allowing him time away. 7NEWS’s report on the leave
What the announcement does—and does not—confirm
The reports establish the dates and circumstances of Mac’s planned return in December 2023. They do not establish his current Sunrise roster or career status in 2026. A 7NEWS report from December 2022 said he had signed on for at least two more years as the program’s weather presenter, but that historical contract detail is not confirmation of his present role. 7NEWS’s December 2022 report
