What Hannah Einbinder said in 2025
At the September 2025 Emmy Awards, Hacks star Hannah Einbinder told E! host Heather McMahan that the show would end with Season 5. “I think it’s nice to do something as many times as it should be done. Not overstay your welcome,” she said. Einbinder added, “You can quote me on that. I’m going on the record on that.”
At the time, HBO Max had not formally announced that the fifth season would be the last. Variety’s September 15, 2025 report also quoted co-creator Paul W. Downs saying the team was working out the season and did not yet know whether the ending they had envisioned would fit its episode count.

When HBO Max confirmed the final season
HBO Max later confirmed Season 5 as the farewell season and announced its schedule: the premiere was April 9, 2026, and the finale was May 28. Einbinder’s earlier statement and the later network announcement were not competing end dates; they were an early on-record confirmation followed by formal confirmation from the platform.

In an August 2026 interview with NPR’s Fresh Air, star Jean Smart said the series had been conceived as a five-year story from the beginning: “Well, it was written as a five-year show from Day 1.” She also said she felt ready to move on from her character. That is Smart’s account of the creative plan and her own perspective, rather than a stated explanation from HBO Max.
