When a TV roast became bullying about my skin tone: Tannishtha Chatterjee on battling colour bias

In 2016 Tannishtha Chatterjee left a Colors roast segment after jokes about her skin tone. Here is what her account, as reported by Scroll.in, establishes and what it leaves unverified.

In September 2016, actor Tannishtha Chatterjee walked out of a segment of Colors’ comedy roast show Comedy Nights Bachao Taaza after jokes that, according to her account, centred on her skin tone. She later described the experience in a statement that Scroll.in published on September 28, 2016. The episode is a specific, first-person account, not an independently verified record of what was broadcast, and the reporting that exists on it is built on her statement.

What the appearance was and why she was there

According to Scroll.in’s 2016 report, Chatterjee attended the taping with actor Radhika Apte and director Leena Yadav to promote Parched, the film Yadav directed. The article gives September 25, 2016 as the date of the episode. Chatterjee describes the film’s themes as including gender, body, skin, sexuality and caste, which she connects to the issues she later raised about the show.

The jokes she says she was subjected to

Chatterjee says that during a roast segment the jokes focused on her skin tone. The report includes a question about whether she had eaten dark jamuns, a remark that plays on her complexion. Chatterjee’s account is that the roast format, which is meant to be affectionate ribbing of a guest, had turned into something she experienced as an attack on a single trait.

She says she left after another segment she also found offensive, and objected to the organisers that what was happening had become bullying rather than a roast. The report does not establish the programme makers’ version of events, and it does not include a full transcript of the episode, so the exact wording of each joke rests on her recollection as reproduced in the article.

Her argument: colour prejudice, caste and class

Chatterjee’s statement, which Scroll.in reproduced with her permission, argues that jokes about dark skin draw on a wider prejudice about colour. In her view that prejudice intersects with caste and class. She also argues that the problem was not only personal to her, because the normalisation of such jokes on a popular television show makes them seem acceptable to a large audience.

These are her arguments and analysis. The article presents them as her perspective and does not cite a study, survey or statistic on colour bias in India. Readers looking for measured data on the subject will not find it in this report, and nothing here should be read as a quantified finding about how common such jokes are.

Her words

The clearest statement in the report is Chatterjee’s own: “I soon realised that the only quality they found worth roasting about in me was my skin tone.” She also asks: “Why does skin tone still lend itself to jokes?” Elsewhere the source records her frustration in these words: “How is it funny to call someone dark?” and “In a India of 2016 I still have to be apologetic about my skin tone?” The last line is quoted exactly as published, including its grammar.

What the source does and does not establish

  • Established by the report: Chatterjee attended the show to promote Parched, the jokes she describes focused on her skin tone, she left after a further segment, and she challenged the organisers’ description of the segment as a roast.
  • Attributed to her, not verified: the content of the jokes, the reasons she gives for leaving, and her link between colour bias, caste and class.
  • Not established by the report: the programme makers’ response, a complete episode transcript, independent confirmation of the broadcast, or any statistic on colour bias.
  • Not established as current: whether the episode is still available to watch, or where Parched is currently available. Check the broadcaster and distributors directly before relying on either.

Why the account still matters for documentary readers

Chatterjee’s statement links a single appearance to a broader question about how mainstream entertainment treats skin tone. It is a first-hand account that a reader can weigh against the broadcast itself, if it becomes accessible, and against other sources. Read it as one person’s testimony, presented with her permission, rather than as a documented case study.
