A special edition is a broad label for any version that differs from the standard release in some stated way. An anniversary edition is a version tied to a milestone, such as a tenth birthday or a franchise anniversary. The two labels overlap, and neither one by itself tells you what changed. The product description is what settles the question. For The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the difference is concrete: Anniversary Edition bundles the Special Edition game with add-on content and Creation Club material, and it is sold to owners of Special Edition as a separate upgrade.
How the two labels are used
Special edition: a broad description of difference
“Special edition” describes a version distinguished by some specified content, presentation, or technical feature. It is a catch-all. A special edition can add bonus chapters, interviews, artwork, altered packaging, or a bundle of earlier material, or it can change very little beyond the cover. The label alone does not promise any of these.
The official ONIX book-product codelist, maintained by EDItEUR, treats the term the same way. Its edition-type list groups anniversary editions under “Special edition,” and it instructs publishers to use the edition statement to describe the exact nature of the special edition. In other words, the standard itself expects the label to be explained rather than trusted. The codelist is published at https://ns.editeur.org/onix/en/21.
Anniversary edition: a milestone, not a contents list
An anniversary edition is released to mark a publication, product, or franchise milestone. Publishers and studios often use it to justify new material or new presentation, but the name does not say which changes were made. A tenth-anniversary release may be a straight reprint in a new cover, or it may include substantial new text. You have to check which.

Film and video: supplements and technical features
For film and video, the Office québécois de la langue française defines a special edition as one distinguished by supplements or technical characteristics. Its entry also warns that commercial labels such as “collector” or “deluxe” do not always mean a more complete or higher-quality release. That caution applies directly to documentary discs, where a “special edition” may mean a commentary track, a making-of featurette, or an improved transfer, or it may mean only new packaging. The entry is at https://vitrinelinguistique.oqlf.gouv.qc.ca/fiche-gdt/fiche/8869297/edition-speciale.
Where the labels overlap
The two terms are not mutually exclusive. Publishers have used “special edition” for releases that were, by any reasonable reading, anniversary editions. Scholastic called the tenth-anniversary release of The Hunger Games a “Special Edition,” and its 2008 release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was announced as a “special anniversary edition.” These examples show that the labels are used interchangeably in marketing. They do not show that any particular contents standard applies.
What the contents look like in practice
The publisher’s announcement is the most reliable guide to what a given edition contains. Two Scholastic announcements illustrate the range.
The Hunger Games Special Edition (2018)
Scholastic’s April 19, 2018 announcement described more than 50 pages of bonus material, including an interview with Suzanne Collins, an archival conversation with Walter Dean Myers, and a timeline. It also listed a new paperback cover and a boxed-set option. “More than fifty pages” is the publisher’s own product detail, not an independently measured figure. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone special anniversary edition (2008)
Scholastic’s May 20, 2008 announcement said this edition would include exclusive bonus material, new cover art, and a four-color frontispiece. The bonus material is described in the announcement only at that level of detail, so anyone comparing it with a later reprint should check the specific inclusions. The Skyrim case
Most searches for this comparison concern Skyrim, and the answer there is specific. Bethesda’s current product page describes the full Skyrim Anniversary Edition as including the core game, the official add-ons Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn, and both existing and new Creation Club content such as quests, dungeons, bosses, weapons, and spells. It also offers a digital Anniversary Upgrade for players who already own Skyrim Special Edition. The page states that Special Edition is required for the upgrade. The product page is at https://elderscrolls.bethesda.net/en-US/skyrim10/buy-now.
Launch-era details from 2021
Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition FAQ, dated November 5, 2021, described the release as bundling Special Edition with the Creation Club content available at launch. It listed launch prices of USD $49.99 for the full edition and USD $19.99 for the upgrade, and it warned that prices and availability could differ by region and platform. Those prices are historical launch figures and should not be read as current prices. The same FAQ said physical copies would be sold for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and that an internet connection was required to redeem and download the included Creation Club content. That was the position in 2021 and may not match current listings. The FAQ is at https://elderscrolls.bethesda.net/en-EU/news/5esC91g2ABY1jQ97uq39z/skyrim-anniversary-edition-faq.
Bethesda’s October 29, 2021 preview named four creations that were made free to Special Edition owners at that time, and it described the additional creations included with Anniversary Edition. That list reflects the 2021 launch and is not a complete current inventory. The preview is at https://elderscrolls.bethesda.net/en-EU/news/skyrim-anniversary-edition-and-creation-club-content-first-look.

Which Skyrim option fits your situation
| Your situation | What Bethesda describes | What to check on the listing |
|---|---|---|
| You do not own Special Edition | The full Anniversary Edition includes the core game, the official add-ons, and Creation Club content. | Your platform, the current listing, and the exact list of included content. |
| You already own Special Edition | The Anniversary Upgrade adds the Anniversary content. Special Edition is required to buy it. | Whether the upgrade is offered on your platform, and whether any included content duplicates what you already have. |
| You want a physical copy | The 2021 FAQ stated that PS4 and Xbox One discs were offered, with internet access needed to download the included Creation Club content. | Current stock, the console generation printed on the box, and the download requirement on the current listing. Not stated for current disc contents. |
How to decide which version you need
- Identify the exact product. “Special Edition” and “Anniversary Edition” appear across books, games, and films. Start from the publisher’s or studio’s own product page.
- List what is actually included. Look for specific items such as added chapters, interviews, commentary, expansions, bonus material, artwork, packaging, or technical improvements. Ignore the label until you have this list.
- Check whether the anniversary label means revised content. It does not automatically do so. Look for an explicit statement that the text, transfer, or content was revised or expanded.
- For Skyrim, check whether you already own Special Edition. If you do, the Anniversary Upgrade is the relevant option, provided it is sold for your platform. If you do not, the full Anniversary Edition is the one to compare.
- Confirm the platform and format. Availability and bundled content can vary by platform and region, and a physical copy may still depend on an online download for included content.
What is and is not established
- No single cross-media definition makes the two labels exclusive. The clearest general evidence is the ONIX classification and the way publishers have used the terms.
- The bonus-page count, the 2008 bonus material, and the Skyrim content lists all come from the publishers’ own announcements. None of them is an independent measurement.
- The Skyrim prices and physical-copy details date from 2021. Current prices, stock, and platform contents should be checked on the live listing.
Read the product description, list what is included, and treat the anniversary or special label as a starting point rather than a promise. On a documentary disc or a book, that means checking the extras and the revisions before you pay the premium.
