The line comes from Walker, Texas Ranger Season 6, Episode 3, “Lucas.” Haley Joel Osment plays Lucas, a boy with AIDS. Conan O’Brien later replayed a clip of Osment saying, “Walker told me I have AIDS,” as part of the comedic Walker, Texas Ranger Lever segment. In the episode, the line belongs to a serious story about Lucas and his mother—not a scene in which Walker casually diagnoses him.
Where the clip comes from
The episode transcript identifies the installment as “Lucas.” Lucas is a child whose AIDS diagnosis shapes the story, and Walker becomes involved in his case. The transcript later has Walker tell Lucas’s mother, “I said your son has AIDS.” The transcript is a third-party source, not an official network script, so its wording should be understood as transcripted dialogue rather than script-level verification.
Why it became a Conan joke
Conan O’Brien’s Walker, Texas Ranger Lever segment used clips from the show for comedy. In an interview on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend with Joel McHale, Conan recalled the Osment clip and the line, “Walker told me I have AIDS.” He described it as a real clip and remembered the unexpected line landing powerfully. Read the interview transcript.
The humor depends on the line’s abruptness and the way the clip was presented amid the segment’s comedy. Without the episode’s dramatic setup, it can sound as if the show has Walker announce an AIDS diagnosis in a startlingly blunt or absurd way. In the original story, Lucas’s diagnosis is part of a serious plot about his care and the stigma around him.

Why the Lever bit stopped
In that same interview, Conan recalled that the bit ended after actors whose appearances had been used recognized themselves and sought residual payments. That is Conan’s retrospective explanation; it is not independently confirmed here by contract or legal records.
