John Cusack has not retired. He has appeared in films as recently as 2025, but in recent years he has largely stepped away from major studio movies, focusing instead on smaller projects and writing. In a July 2026 interview with The Independent, he connected that shift to greater studio involvement and less creative autonomy.
From teen comedies to unconventional roles
Cusack first became prominent in 1980s films such as Sixteen Candles and Better Off Dead. His career then broadened well beyond teen comedy, moving between mainstream releases and more unusual dramatic and comic projects.
Among his best-known later films are Say Anything (1989), Grosse Pointe Blank (1997), Being John Malkovich (1999) and High Fidelity (2000). Rotten Tomatoes’ career overview likewise describes a filmography spanning teen comedies and dramatic roles.
Why is John Cusack in fewer major movies?
In July 2026, while promoting Momo, a forthcoming graphic novel he created with artist Ignacio Noé, Cusack described valuing the creative freedom of working without layers of committee input. He told The Independent: “It was just me and Ignacio’s story, and that doesn’t happen today.”

He also discussed the pressure that can accompany film financing, saying investors who put money into a film budget want a say and may be fearful. His remarks explain his perspective on creative control; they do not establish one cause for every career choice or show that he has rejected all studio projects.
Cusack has also worked outside acting: he co-wrote Things That Can and Cannot Be Said with Arundhati Roy, drawing on their conversations with Edward Snowden. The 2026 report describes Momo as forthcoming but does not give a publication date.
