At a 2024 BFI London Film Festival Screen Talk, she said the people on set were generally “super marvelous” and pointed instead to the importance of kindness and consideration from production leadership.
What Saldaña said about the Pirates set
In remarks reported by Variety on October 14, 2024, Saldaña recalled that she was early in her career when she worked on The Curse of the Black Pearl. She said she barely had her SAG card and was learning as she went, including by spending time with the camera department and asking the director of photography questions.

She described the people around her positively while explaining how leadership could shape the experience: “The crew and the cast, they’re 99% of the time super marvelous.” She continued: “But if the studio and the producers and the director, they’re not leading with kindness and awareness and consideration, then that big of a production can become a really bad experience and you may tip overboard.” She added, “And I kind of did.”
The “99%” is Saldaña’s characterization, not a measured statistic. Her account distinguishes the cast and crew from the leadership she criticized; it does not identify particular people or describe specific incidents.

Why she said the production was difficult
Saldaña’s account centered on being inexperienced and feeling unsupported in the dynamics of a large production. Variety also recounted comments she made to Entertainment Weekly in 2022: she said she walked away without a good overall experience and felt lost in the trenches. Variety reported that producer Jerry Bruckheimer later personally apologized to her.
The apology is reported by Variety; the available account does not establish further details about when it happened or what was said.

How The Terminal changed her view of big productions
Saldaña said she worked with Steven Spielberg on The Terminal eight months later, and that the experience restored her faith that a large production could also be positive. She recalled feeling safe on that set. She also described Spielberg playing music over the loudspeakers between scenes to help the set feel synchronized.
Her comparison is about her own experience on two productions, not a comprehensive account of how either film was made. Variety’s report attributes the 2024 remarks to Saldaña at the BFI London Film Festival Screen Talk; an official transcript or recording was not located.
