Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, apologized for antisemitic remarks and imagery in a full-page advertisement in The Wall Street Journal on January 26, 2026. He said a brain injury and bipolar I disorder were part of the context for his conduct, but added that they did not excuse it. Those are Ye’s claims about his health, not an established medical explanation for antisemitism.

What did Ye say in the Wall Street Journal ad?

The full-page advertisement was presented as an open letter titled “To Those I’ve Hurt.” It addressed the Jewish and Black communities and apologized for conduct that included antisemitic remarks and imagery.

Ye wrote, “I regret and am deeply mortified by my actions in that state, and am committed to accountability, treatment, and meaningful change. It does not excuse what I did, though,” according to The Washington Post’s January 26, 2026 report. The Guardian reported that the ad also said: “I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people.”

What explanation did Ye give for his conduct?

Ye said an injury to his right frontal lobe in a 2002 car accident went undiagnosed until 2023, and connected his actions to bipolar I disorder. In a Vanity Fair interview published January 27, 2026, he described a four-month manic episode in the first half of 2025 and said he had entered treatment.

These are Ye’s reported statements about his history and health. They do not independently establish that a brain injury or bipolar disorder caused his antisemitic remarks. Nor does a diagnosis explain or excuse antisemitism as a general matter. Dr. Avinoam Patt, director of NYU’s Center for the Study of Antisemitism, told Vanity Fair that “the vast majority of people who have mental health issues, or specifically have bipolar disorder, don’t espouse antisemitic or racist ideas.” Patt also expressed skepticism in light of Ye’s rhetoric over multiple years.

How did this apology compare with Ye’s 2023 apology?

Ye had apologized to the Jewish community before. In December 2023, he posted an apology in Hebrew on Instagram. The Anti-Defamation League described it as a possible first step and said actions would speak louder than words. The American Jewish Committee criticized its wording and accessibility, including the absence of a translation. The Associated Press reported on the 2023 apology and responses.

The earlier response illustrates why organizations and readers may weigh an apology alongside what follows it. In early 2023, the ADL counted at least 30 antisemitic incidents that directly referenced Ye, a figure reported by The Washington Post. That is a historical count attributed to the ADL—not a current total or a measure of all antisemitic incidents.

What happened after the 2026 ad?

In April 2026, UK authorities barred Ye from entering the country, and organizers canceled Wireless Festival. The Associated Press reported that Ye offered to meet members of the UK Jewish community and said, “I know words aren’t enough — I’ll have to show change through my actions.” That later response is relevant context for assessing the apology, but it does not by itself establish whether change occurred.
