Asked to explain the longevity of his marriage to Annie D’Angelo, Willie Nelson gave a personal answer: they agree on a lot, and he considers her a great friend, a great mother and a sharp individual. He said he feels lucky to have her. The “31-year marriage” wording belongs to the interview’s 2023 context; Nelson and D’Angelo married in September 1991, and a July 2026 report still described them as married.
Nelson’s own explanation for the marriage
In an interview with AARP, Nelson was asked, “How do you explain the success and longevity of your marriage to Annie (D’Angelo)?” He answered: “We agree on a lot of things. She has been a great friend over the years. She’s a great mother. She’s just a very sharp individual, and I just feel very lucky to have her.” AARP interview
That is Nelson’s description of his marriage, not a claim that one formula guarantees a lasting relationship. His answer centers on shared outlook, friendship, respect for Annie’s qualities and gratitude.
Why the headline says 31 years
Nelson and D’Angelo met in 1986 on a film set, where she was working as a makeup artist, according to the Houston Chronicle’s 2026 account. They married in September 1991. The 31-year figure reflects the 2023 interview context; by October 2026, their marriage had lasted about 35 years. The Chronicle reported in July 2026 that they remained married.

His earlier advice about accepting a partner
In a 2013 AARP interview, Nelson offered a related thought about getting along: “If you really want to get along with somebody, let them be themselves. Don’t try to change anybody. And they should let you be yourself: ‘You loved me when you met me, so let’s keep going!’” AARP interview
It is advice Nelson gave in his own voice, rather than evidence of a universal rule for relationships. Read alongside his later answer, it suggests that he values both common ground and room for each person to be themselves.

Family and a forthcoming memoir
Nelson and D’Angelo have two sons, Lukas and Micah Nelson, both musicians, the Houston Chronicle reported. The available account supports that family context, but not speculation about the couple’s private life.
A 2026 announcement for Nelson’s forthcoming memoir, The Last Leaf: Reflections on Late-Life Creativity — and My Longest Love Affair, also puts Annie at the center of its description. In wording reproduced from a publicist’s release, Nelson wrote: “The backbone of this book is a love story. The heroine is my wife, Annie, who kept me alive when I was sure I was gone. COVID nearly got me,” the Houston Chronicle reported. That statement was from the announcement, not a full memoir excerpt. The reported publication date was November 10, 2026.
