The seven words Christopher Reeve remembered Dana saying after his 1995 horseback-riding accident were: “You’re still you. And I love you.” He later described them as “the words that saved my life.” This is Reeve’s recollection of what Dana told him, not a recording of her saying it.
What Christopher Reeve recalled
In archival footage featured in the trailer for Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, Reeve describes the despair he felt after the accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. He recalls thinking about activities he feared he would never do again—including skiing, sailing and throwing a ball to his son Will—and about the possibility that he and Dana might have to let him go.
He then remembers Dana telling him: “You’re still you. And I love you.” Reeve’s words in the footage, as transcribed by CBS News, are: “And then she said the words that saved my life: ‘You’re still you. And I love you.’” The phrase “saved my life” is his description of the impact of that moment.
Why the quotation is often called “seven words”
Counting the contraction as one word, the sentence has seven: “You’re” (1), “still” (2), “you” (3), “And” (4), “I” (5), “love” (6), “you” (7). The punctuation and wording are retained as reported.

How Dana described the family impact of paralysis
Dana later wrote to fellow caregivers, “After my husband Christopher was injured, it became obvious that paralysis is a family issue.” In the same letter, she described caregiving as involving physical, emotional, social and economic needs. Her statement offers her own perspective on the wider effects of Christopher’s injury without suggesting that every family’s experience is the same.
The connection to Still Me
The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation identifies Still Me as Reeve’s autobiography, published by Random House in April 1998. The book spent 11 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, according to the Foundation, and its audio recording won the Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album in February 1999. The Foundation connects Dana’s words with the memoir’s title; these details are listed on its Christopher Reeve biography page.
