In the United States, a movie theater in the 1920s could be called a movie theater, motion-picture theater, moving-picture theater, or movie house. A movie palace was a particular kind of grand theater—not the name for every cinema. Nickelodeon, meanwhile, is chiefly associated with the earlier storefront-theater era.
What were movie theaters called in the 1920s?
There was no single special name for all U.S. cinemas. General terms included “movie theater,” “motion-picture theater,” “moving-picture theater,” and “movie house.” The wording varied with the source and context; the available historical accounts do not establish which term was most common in everyday speech.
The professional press used “moving picture theaters” for buildings that had previously hosted live performances and were adapted to show films, according to the National Park Service’s historical account of Washington, D.C.’s Atlas Theater. The broader vocabulary reflected a changing industry: films were shown in converted buildings as well as in purpose-built theaters.
Were 1920s theaters called nickelodeons?
Usually, “nickelodeon” points to an earlier phase of American film exhibition, not to every 1920s cinema. The Kansas Historical Society places nickelodeons and converted storefront theaters roughly between 1900 and 1915. The National Park Service account describes modest nickelodeons giving way to full-scale theaters after 1910.

The transition was gradual rather than a universal overnight change. The National Park Service’s registration reports an estimate of 8,000 to 10,000 nickelodeons by 1908; that is the document’s historical estimate, not a modern census. By the following decade, purpose-built theaters and more elaborate venues were part of the landscape, making “nickelodeon” too narrow as a blanket label for cinemas in the 1920s.
What was a movie palace?
A movie palace was the grand, architecturally elaborate end of the theater spectrum. Purpose-built movie theaters appeared around 1915, and efforts to make venues increasingly spectacular helped produce the palace type. The Kansas Historical Society says palace designs became more fanciful during the 1920s. The National Park Service’s Atlas Theater registration describes the motion-picture palace as “a cherished part of American life” by the middle of that decade.

Not every theater showing films was a palace. Cities could have prominent downtown palaces alongside smaller neighborhood theaters; smaller towns might have one or two more modest or locally grand movie houses. The distinction was one of scale and setting, not simply whether the venue screened movies.
How did theater types differ?
| Term | What it describes | Typical scale or setting |
|---|---|---|
| Movie theater, motion-picture theater, moving-picture theater, movie house | General terms for a venue showing films; wording depended on source and context. | Could refer to theaters of different sizes, from neighborhood venues to large urban houses. |
| Nickelodeon | An early, commonly storefront-based movie venue associated chiefly with the first decades of commercial film exhibition. | Modest storefront venue; especially associated with roughly 1900–1915 in the Kansas Historical Society account. |
| Movie palace | A grand, elaborately designed movie theater. | Often a prominent downtown venue or part of a major city’s theater district. |
| Neighborhood theater | A local theater serving a community, distinct from a city’s grand downtown palaces. | Smaller-scale local venue; documented as a distinct category in Washington, D.C., by the National Park Service. |
What the terms tell us about the 1920s cinema landscape
The names reflect a period of expansion and changing buildings, not a single standardized category. Some film venues occupied spaces first used for other purposes; purpose-built theaters became more prominent; and the most lavish houses stood apart from smaller neighborhood cinemas.
The National Park Service registration gives a local illustration, not a nationwide count: Washington, D.C., had 47 movie houses by 1925, including at least 19 neighborhood theaters. Those figures describe the city alone. They help show why “movie theater” covered a range of places, while “movie palace” identified a particular grand subtype.
This terminology is grounded in U.S. sources. It should not be assumed to describe usage in every country; regional terms require country-specific evidence. For further historical context, see the Kansas Historical Society’s account of movie theaters and the National Park Service’s Atlas Theater and Shops registration.
