After episode two of Adult Swim’s 2024 Uzumaki anime drew criticism for a sharp drop in animation quality, executive producer Jason DeMarco said the team had chosen to air all four episodes despite the flaws rather than release nothing or stop after episode one. He did not explain what specifically went wrong or name anyone he considered responsible. His BlueSky posts were later deleted; their wording survives in contemporaneous reports.
What did Jason DeMarco say happened?
In posts responding to the reaction to episode two, DeMarco described three options the team had considered: not finish the anime and air nothing, complete and air only episode one, or release all four episodes “warts and all.” He said they chose the third option out of respect for the work.
Gizmodo quoted DeMarco’s deleted post as saying: “I can’t talk about what went down, but we were screwed over, and the options were A) not finish and air nothing and call it a loss, B) Just finish and air Episode 1 and leave it incomplete or C) run all four, warts and all. Out of respect for the hard work we chose C.” Gizmodo’s October 8, 2024 report reproduced the wording. ComicBook.com also reported the release-options statement and that DeMarco later deleted the posts.
Why does episode two look different from episode one?
The animation shift was the visible issue that prompted the controversy, but DeMarco’s quoted comments do not identify its cause. He said he could not discuss what had happened. The reported posts offer his explanation for why the episodes aired, not a production account of how the quality changed.

Later reporting notes different credits across the episodes. Episode one credited Hiroshi Nagahama as series director and Fugaku for animation; episode two credited Yuji Moriyama and Akatsuki. Those credits show a change in credited personnel and studios, but they do not establish why the credits changed or explain the broader production problems. Slashfilm’s April 2, 2025 follow-up also notes that a circulating claim that Nagahama was removed for cost reasons was not confirmed.
Who did DeMarco blame?
He did not name anyone in the reported comments. Gizmodo quoted another deleted post: “Unfortunately, I can’t tell them who to blame it on… but someone is definitely at fault here, and we all just had to do our best when things imploded.” That statement signals DeMarco believed someone was responsible, but it does not identify a person, studio, or specific decision.
