Disney’s 2025 Snow White faced several pressures at once: the challenge of remaking a foundational animated film, public disputes over its story and representation, a mixed critical response, and an opening weekend below expectations against a reported production budget above $250 million. Those facts help explain why the launch was difficult, but they do not prove that any single controversy or creative choice caused the box-office result.
Why did this remake attract such intense scrutiny?
The live-action musical reimagining arrived with an unusually large legacy to manage. Disney’s 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the studio’s first animated feature, and Disney describes it as a film that helped establish its animation studio. That history made changes to the story especially visible; calling the original Disney’s “prized possession,” though, is a headline framing, not a measurable statement about the company’s valuation of the property. The new film, released theatrically on March 21, 2025, stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. Marc Webb directed, and Erin Cressida Wilson wrote the screenplay. Disney presents it as a musical reimagining rather than a shot-for-shot remake. Disney’s film page
What changed in the live-action Snow White?
Snow White’s role and the story
The remake gives Snow White a more active path toward leadership. Disney’s synopsis describes her fleeing her stepmother, finding the dwarfs, meeting Jonathan, and being inspired to find her voice and face the Evil Queen. Zegler had spoken critically of the original romance and described approaching the character as a future leader. These are deliberate adaptation choices: viewers may welcome the added agency or miss the original’s simpler fairy-tale emphasis, but the change alone does not establish why audiences did or did not buy tickets. The songs and the dwarfs
The soundtrack combines familiar songs, including “Heigh-Ho” and “Whistle While You Work,” with new songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Disney identifies “Waiting on a Wish” as a new ballad. In his Associated Press review, Jake Coyle praised Zegler’s singing and singled out that song, while arguing that the new material did not always sit comfortably beside the older favorites. That is one critic’s assessment, not a universal verdict. Disney’s release announcement and song details and Coyle’s AP review
The seven dwarfs are computer-generated characters. That choice became a separate point of dispute about representation and casting. Actor Peter Dinklage had criticized revisiting the fairy tale’s dwarf premise in 2022; the later decision to use CGI characters prompted its own debate over how the film should represent little people and who should play those characters. The objections are related to the adaptation but are not identical: criticism of the premise, criticism of a representation choice, and discussion of casting raise different questions. TIME’s reporting on the controversy
How did the pre-release controversies affect the film’s reception?
The movie’s public conversation included criticism of Zegler’s casting, her remarks about the original romance, Dinklage’s objection to the premise, and debate over the CGI dwarfs. It also included racist backlash to Zegler’s casting and culture-war attacks. Those should not be collapsed into one generic “controversy”: criticism of an adaptation choice is not the same as racist abuse, and neither by itself shows how a particular viewer behaved at the box office. TIME documented these strands of the dispute before release. TIME’s account
Politics surrounding the cast added another layer of attention. TIME reported differing views held by Zegler and Gadot amid the Israel-Hamas war and protests around Gadot’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. That context helps describe the publicity environment, but the reporting does not establish that it changed ticket sales.

The result was a film that was being debated before most audiences could judge the finished musical on its own terms. That created reputational risk: story revisions and casting decisions became part of the film’s identity in public discussion. It remains a possible factor in audience response, not a demonstrated cause of the opening.
What do the reviews and audience figures say?
In its opening-weekend report, the Associated Press recorded a Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 43% “fresh.” That is a time-specific snapshot reported by AP, not a permanent score or a measure of audience opinion. Coyle’s review was mixed rather than wholly dismissive: he praised Zegler’s spirited performance and singing, while criticizing aspects of the adaptation and the computer-generated dwarfs. Disney’s separate UK and Ireland announcement reported a four-star Comscore audience rating across demographics, with 88% Total Positive among children and 94% among girls. These are Disney-reported survey figures for that geography and those audience groups; they do not represent all viewers or establish how audiences elsewhere felt. The contrast is a useful reminder that a critic-score snapshot and a regional audience survey measure different things. Disney UK’s opening announcement

AP reported that the film opened below expectations in March 2025. Its opening figures were substantial in absolute terms, but the worldwide launch fell short of the near-$100 million opening AP said had been expected, while the reported production budget made the performance especially scrutinized.

|---|---|---|
| U.S. domestic opening | $43 million | Associated Press opening-weekend figure, reported March 23, 2025. |

| Worldwide opening | $87.3 million | AP’s combined opening figure; below the near-$100 million worldwide opening AP said had been expected. |

These are launch figures, not the final worldwide theatrical gross and not a profit-and-loss statement. A production budget does not include every cost or revenue stream: marketing, distribution terms, later theatrical sales, home entertainment, and streaming value all matter to profitability. The cited opening report does not settle the film’s final financial outcome. Associated Press, March 23, 2025
Historical comparisons can provide scale, but not a clean verdict. AP noted that Dumbo opened to $46 million in 2019 and Cinderella to $67.9 million in 2015; it also noted that The Lion King (2019) earned more than $1.6 billion worldwide despite weak reviews. These are nominal figures from different years and releases, not inflation-adjusted or like-for-like measures of profitability. They show why a review score alone cannot predict a remake’s commercial result.
When did it reach home viewing?
Disney announced a digital release for May 13, 2025, followed by a Disney+ debut on June 11, 2025. Those were the announced windows; they do not establish present-day availability in every country or region. Disney UK’s digital release announcement and Disney UK’s Disney+ announcement
So what went wrong?
The most defensible answer is that several risks converged rather than one factor bringing the film down. A celebrated source made every adaptation choice highly visible; updates to Snow White’s agency, the songs, and the dwarfs became subjects of argument; political and racist backlash intensified the publicity around the cast; reviews were mixed to negative in the opening-weekend snapshot; and the domestic and worldwide openings came in below expectations against a reported production budget above $250 million.
