In September and October 2005, British media reported that Miller had been seeing Craig while Law was trying to win her back. The Associated Press, reporting on those claims, quoted Miller’s denial: “There’s nothing going on between me and Daniel. We were in a movie together two years ago.” AP also noted that the report of Law and Miller’s split was attributed to People, whose article named no sources. The actors had worked with both men: Miller appeared with Law in Alfie and with Craig in Layer Cake, both released in 2004. What did Jude Law’s 2005 apology say?
In July 2005, after a newspaper published material attributed to the diary of his children’s nanny, Law issued a public statement apologizing to Miller and their families. He said, “I am deeply ashamed and upset that I’ve hurt Sienna and the people most close to us,” and added, “There is no defence for my actions which I sincerely regret.” The apology is a documented statement by Law; the allegations about the nanny should be described as reported allegations rather than expanded beyond what the account establishes. What did Miller say about the Daniel Craig voicemail?
At the phone-hacking trial in January 2014, Miller said it was “absolutely feasible” that she had left a voicemail on Craig’s phone, but disputed the romantic meaning assigned to it. She described their connection as a “brief encounter” and said the message’s closing words, “I love you,” were how she signed off calls to friends: “It’s a declaration of friendship. It’s how I end all my calls to friends.” Her testimony therefore acknowledged a brief encounter while challenging the claim that the voicemail proved a declaration of romantic love. The voicemail and the alleged relationships resurfaced in the context of phone-hacking litigation and press coverage of Miller’s private life. In 2011, The Independent reported that Miller received £100,000 in damages and an unreserved apology from News International after allegations that her voicemails had been intercepted. The paper said her lawyers complained that at least 11 articles had resulted from hacked voicemails; those figures concern the privacy case, not the alleged relationships. In 2015, Miller told The Guardian that coverage of the court proceedings had revived her past relationship with Law and the Craig voicemail, and objected to the implication that she had been having affairs.
