In Ford v. Ferrari, Matt Damon’s Carroll Shelby wears a Heuer Carrera 7753 SN, while Christian Bale’s Ken Miles wears a Heuer Autavia reference 2446, often called the “Rindt.” Neither is a period-correct choice for the film’s main 1966 events: the Autavia appeared in 1968 and the Carrera 7753 around 1970. The real men’s watches were different: Ken Miles is associated with a Breitling Co-Pilot Chronograph, and Carroll Shelby appears in period photographs wearing a two-tone Rolex.
What watch does Matt Damon wear as Carroll Shelby?
Damon’s film watch is identified as a Heuer Carrera reference 7753 SN, a vintage chronograph with a light dial and dark contrasting subdials. The contrasting layout is often described as a reverse panda or panda-style appearance. Hodinkee and OnTheDash identify the watch as a Carrera 7753 SN. Hodinkee OnTheDash

The reference is a small costume-history anachronism. OnTheDash says the Carrera 30 reference 7753 came in 1970, and Hodinkee says it reached the market that year; the film’s story is chiefly set in 1966. The evidence identifies the movie watch, not a Heuer owned or worn by the historical Shelby.
What watch does Christian Bale wear as Ken Miles?
Bale wears a Heuer Autavia reference 2446 in the Rindt configuration. The black dial, light-colored registers and tachymeter bezel make it visually distinct from Shelby’s lighter Carrera. Hodinkee and OnTheDash identify the Autavia as the film watch, and OnTheDash says TAG Heuer confirmed the identification. Hodinkee OnTheDash

- In the 1960s, Ferrari is an untouchable figure in racing. With Enzo Ferrari (Remo Girone) ardently chasing after excellence, the company is irrefutably the best there is. Ford’s Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) wants in on the success, and so he journeys to Italy to propose a merger with the automobile giant.
The Autavia is also later than the events depicted: Hodinkee and OnTheDash place the Rindt configuration’s introduction in 1968, two years after the film’s main 1966 setting. On screen, Bale often wears the watch on the inside of his wrist, so it can be hard to see; Hodinkee notes a clearer glimpse during a scene touring Ford’s facilities. WatchSpotting

What watches did the real Shelby and Miles wear?
Ken Miles: Breitling Co-Pilot
The Autavia worn by Bale should not be confused with Miles’s own watch. Monochrome identifies Miles’s regular watch as a Breitling Co-Pilot Chronograph; OnTheDash specifies reference 765. Monochrome captions a 1966 photograph of Miles wearing one while seated in a Porsche 906. These sources do not establish that Miles owned the Autavia used in the film. Monochrome Watches OnTheDash

Carroll Shelby: two-tone Rolex in period photographs
Monochrome reports photographs of Shelby wearing a two-tone Rolex in 1959 and at Le Mans in 1964. That reporting does not document the Carrera as his personal watch; a costume identification is not biographical evidence. Monochrome Watches
A separate Rolex prize after Daytona
Monochrome also reports that after Miles and co-driver Lloyd Ruby won the 1965 Daytona Continental 2,000 km, each received a Rolex 6541 Milgauss with a smooth bezel. This is a reported prize-watch detail, separate from the Breitling identified as Miles’s regular watch. Monochrome Watches

Why the distinction matters
Ford v. Ferrari is a 2019 feature about Shelby, Miles and Ford’s effort around the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. A watch spotted on an actor can be accurately identified as a film prop without being historically correct for the setting or belonging to the person portrayed. Here, the Carrera and Autavia are recognizable Heuer racing chronographs, but both references came after the events central to the film. Monochrome provides the historical-watch context, while Hodinkee and OnTheDash identify the on-screen watches. Monochrome Watches Hodinkee
