Which Omega is Don Draper’s watch?
Christie’s identifies the screen-used watch as an Omega Seamaster De Ville, reference 166.020. Its catalog describes a circa-1960 example with a stainless-steel case, black gloss dial, date display, center seconds, and caliber 560 automatic movement. The case measures 34 mm. Christie’s auction catalog is the strongest source for the specific watch’s identification and specifications.
An early Fratello identification also describes the on-screen watch as a black-dial Seamaster De Ville with a date, but estimates the movement as caliber 562 or 563. For the screen-used example’s movement, Christie’s later catalog entry specifies caliber 560.
Was the black crosshair dial original?
No. Christie’s states that the dial was repainted black with crosshairs before the watch appeared on the show. The auction catalog also says a second Omega was repainted to match as a spare, but that spare was not used on screen. The distinctive dial is therefore part of the production’s styling, not proof that a similar vintage watch has its factory-original dial.

That distinction matters when comparing watches: a piece can resemble Don’s screen watch without being the same watch or having the same provenance. Christie’s catalog identifies its example as worn by Jon Hamm as Don Draper; appearance alone cannot establish that history.
Why did the show choose a Seamaster De Ville?
According to Hodinkee’s account of the sourcing, prop master Ellen Freund needed a watch for Don shortly before filming. Vintage dealer Derek Dier suggested the Seamaster De Ville as a recognizable 1960s Omega. The choice fit the show’s period look: Hodinkee describes the production’s target as a watch from 1966, the season’s setting.

The fictional year and the auction catalog’s circa-1960 date refer to different things. One describes the period the show was depicting; the other is the cataloged date of the physical screen-used watch. Fratello characterizes the De Ville as the dressier side of Omega’s Seamaster line, a natural fit for a character usually seen in tailored suits.

If you are considering a vintage Seamaster De Ville 166.020, separate the goal of matching the show’s look from the goal of finding an original, well-documented watch. Fratello cautions buyers about redials and incorrect crowns; the production watch itself demonstrates why dial appearance needs careful interpretation.

- Reference and case: Confirm the reference and inspect the case details rather than relying on a listing title or a resemblance to the television prop.
- Dial originality: Ask directly whether the dial has been refinished. A black dial with crosshairs is not evidence of factory originality.
- Movement and service: Request movement details and any service documentation. A vintage mechanical watch’s condition should be assessed on its own merits.
- Provenance and seller terms: Look for documentation supporting any claim that a watch is screen-used, and review the seller’s history and return terms.
