The pose does not prove he was masturbating: his hand appears near his groin, but the Italian Association of Volcanology says it may instead be grasping the edge of a cloak. Heat-related contraction is another possible explanation for the position of his limbs. Neither interpretation establishes what this particular man intended.
Why the pose does not prove what he was doing
A hand near the groin can invite a confident story, but a cast records a body’s outline and context—not its owner’s thoughts or intentions. The familiar label “masturbating man” is an interpretation of the pose, not an established account of his final actions.
The Italian Association of Volcanology describes a male cast with contracted limbs and a right hand that appears to reach for the edge of a cloak, possibly to cover his face. That is a cautious reading of the cast’s appearance, not proof that he was shielding himself. Associazione Italiana di Vulcanologia: I calchi delle vittime di Pompei
Archaeologist Esmé Louise Jame has also described heat-related contraction as a plausible explanation for flexed limbs. That possibility helps explain why a body might have an unusual posture, but it cannot tell us precisely how this man’s hand came to rest. What Pompeii’s casts actually preserve
The casts are not bodies turned to stone. As bodies decomposed in volcanic deposits, cavities remained in the material around them. Archaeologists filled some of those cavities with plaster, reproducing the shapes left behind. The Archaeological Park of Pompeii says “the form of their bodies was preserved even after the biological material decomposed.” Some casts preserve details such as clothing, and some contain human bones. Giuseppe Fiorelli’s successful casting method dates to 1863. Archaeological Park of Pompeii: The Casts
The park reports that remains of over one thousand victims have been found and that a little over a hundred casts were made. A 2024 INGV conference abstract gives the more specific figure of 104 plaster casts. These are different counts: the number of victims found is not the number of casts made, and not every victim received a cast. Why no single explanation fits every victim
People found at Pompeii were not all in the same position, and their deaths should not be reduced to one universal explanation. A peer-reviewed 2023 study of victims at Porta Nola describes people lying on their backs, prone, or on their sides; some were covering themselves with garments. It discusses asphyxia and later thermal effects, while cautioning that different people may have died in different ways. Its findings concern that group of victims and cannot be transferred wholesale to the man in the viral image.
The study’s authors conclude: “Generalizing and supporting a sole hypothesis of death becomes overly reductive.” PLOS ONE, “The casts of Pompeii: Post-depositional methodological insights,” August 23, 2023

What remains unknown about this particular cast
The available evidence does not establish that the man was masturbating, deliberately protecting his genitals, or certainly shielding his face. The cloak explanation and heat-related contraction are possibilities, not confirmed reconstructions of his actions. Nor does the evidence identify the precise viral image’s original excavation context well enough to support a more specific claim.
Cast formation depended on the arrangement and character of volcanic material around each victim, and many casts were moved after they were made. A cast’s present display position therefore need not be its original position. INGV conference abstract, 2024
