A U.S. raid to capture two lieutenants of Somali faction leader Mohamed Farah Aideed turned into a prolonged urban battle after Somali fighters shot down two Black Hawk helicopters. U.S. troops fought to reach the crash sites and rescue or recover those trapped there.
What was the Black Hawk Down incident?
“Black Hawk Down” is the familiar name for the Battle of Mogadishu, a clash during the U.S. military operation known as Operation Gothic Serpent. Task Force Ranger’s immediate objective was to capture two of Aideed’s lieutenants. The mission took place near Mogadishu’s Bakara Market area, where the planned raid and withdrawal escalated into a fight for the downed aircraft and their crews.

The name refers to the two U.S. MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters shot down during the operation. Their loss changed the mission: forces had to secure the crash sites and fight through the city as part of an urgent rescue and recovery effort. The operation involved Rangers, special operations forces, and aviation support from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. The Airborne and Special Operations Museum describes the force as approximately 160 troops, 19 aircraft, and 12 vehicles; those are that museum’s figures.
Why were U.S. forces in Mogadishu?
Somalia was experiencing civil conflict and a severe humanitarian crisis. U.S. forces initially entered as part of a wider international effort responding to famine and insecurity. By 1993, the U.S. mission also included action against Aideed’s faction following attacks on United Nations and U.S. forces. The October raid was therefore a specific capture mission within a larger intervention and political crisis, not an isolated operation.
#1 Best Overall
The U.S. Department of State’s historical overview says the United Nations effort did not resolve Somalia’s political crisis, even as the United States continued responding to humanitarian needs. The battle became a prominent episode in public memory of that intervention, but it should not be treated as the sole cause of every later policy decision about Somalia. How did the raid turn into a battle?
The capture raid begins
On October 3, Task Force Ranger moved to seize two senior lieutenants of Aideed. The target area was near Bakara Market. During the operation, troops began loading captured prisoners into vehicles.

Two helicopters are shot down
The first Black Hawk was shot down while the assault force was loading prisoners. A second helicopter was also brought down. Somali fighters used rocket-propelled grenades against the aircraft. The losses forced U.S. forces to shift attention from completing a rapid raid and withdrawal to reaching and securing the crash sites.
Rescue and recovery under fire
Troops attempted to reach the downed aircraft and protect those at the crash sites as fighting continued through the city. The Battle of Mogadishu lasted roughly 15 hours, according to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force’s account. The helicopter losses and the resulting effort to rescue or recover the crews and trapped troops were central to the battle. How many people were killed or wounded?
U.S. institutional accounts report 18 American soldiers killed in the battle. The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force also reports 84 U.S. wounded. The U.S. Department of State describes Somali deaths as numbering in the hundreds, but the sources cited here do not establish a precise, reconciled Somali death toll.
| Figure | What the cited institution reports |
|---|---|
| U.S. soldiers killed | 18, according to the U.S. Department of State and National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. |
| U.S. wounded | 84, according to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. |
| Somalis killed | Hundreds, according to the U.S. Department of State; an exact total is not established by that account. |
These figures come from institutional accounts with different scopes and should not be combined with deaths from separate incidents after the battle. U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian: Somalia · National Museum of the U.S. Air Force: Operation Gothic Serpent

Who were Gary Gordon and Randall Shughart?
Master Sgt. Gary Gordon and Sgt. 1st Class Randall Shughart are especially associated with acts of valor during the battle. The U.S. Army says both were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor; President Bill Clinton presented the awards on May 23, 1994. U.S. Army: Gary Gordon and Randall Shughart
How does the battle relate to the book and film?
“Battle of Mogadishu” names the historical event; “Black Hawk Down” also became the title of Mark Bowden’s nonfiction book and the later film based on the battle. Bowden’s work is a narrative account, while military after-action records and institutional histories serve different purposes. A dramatized film can introduce viewers to the event, but it should not be treated as a complete or neutral record of the battle. U.S. Army History review of Bowden’s book
